Aurus – including manufacturer of Russian state limos – has pulled the curtain on the Komendant. The Aurus Komendant is a luxury SUV with which the Russians want to offer an alternative to cars like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga EWB.

Aurus is a brand founded in 2018 that emerged from NAMI and is responsible for, among other things, the state limousine of Russian President Vladimir Putin: the Korzeh. Aurus offers, among other things, the Senate for those who have a less high or even no place at all in the Kremlin. That top sedan was later joined by MPV Arsenal and a convertible version of the Senat. With this brand new Komendant, Aurus now also has an opulent SUV in its range.

The Aurus Komendant is 5.38 meters long and therefore extends over a distance of 18 centimeters greater than the Mercedes-Benz GLS. The wheelbase of the 3.3-tonne colossus is 3.1 meters. With this, the car does not compete with the GLS, which has 3.14 meters between the front and rear axle. At 5.34 meters, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is also shorter than the Komendant. It stands on 20-inch light metal, has a huge fencing in its snout that is somewhat reminiscent of the grilles that Rolls-Royce gives its cars and thanks to the large amount of chrome it looks relatively classic. The entire design is relatively free of external frills, except for the aforementioned chrome work.

Aurus also continues this classic-modern style in the interior of the Komendant. We see a dashboard containing digital displays that are apparently housed in the same panel. The whole is richly covered with wood and beautifully stitched leather. You have no shortage of buttons in the Komendant, judging by the amount of physical keys in the center tunnel, console and on the side of the seats. The rear passengers are also not particularly bad. We see a huge console with induction chargers, storage compartments and a button island to operate the climate control. Behind the headrests of the front seats are screens that can be controlled by means of a round rotary and push button. In addition, you have access to folding tables in the back.

Under the hood is a 4.4 V8, a machine developed by Aurus that sends 598 horsepower to the wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission. The eight-cylinder does not have to do it itself, but is supported by a 63 hp electric motor, so the Aurus is a hybrid. The colossus stomps to a speed of 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds.

The Aurus Komendant will roll off the production line in 2023 in the same factory where Aurus also produces the Senat. The Komendant is by no means a bargain. In Russia, it has a starting price of just under 34 million rubles, converted about €594,000. Like the Senate and Arsenal, the Komendant is named after part of the Kremlin.
