Few things are certain in life, but it is clear that used car prices are currently on the high side. Autoscout24.nl explains the average price of the used cars offered on its site. You guessed it: it has increased again.
In June, the average asking price for a used car on Autoscout24.nl was no less than €23,808. An absolute record, but probably not for long. In May, the average price was still €23,337 and that already indicates that the increase in second-hand prices is continuing. We are now paying an average of €471 more. In the past six months, the average price of a used car on Autoscout24.nl has increased by 7.5 percent (€1,650). To put that in perspective, in the first half of 2021, the average asking price of a used car increased by 3 percent (€588). In July 2021, the average price of a used car on Autoscout24 was €19,870. In a year’s time, almost 20 percent have been added.
The increase in used car prices is of course due to the fact that the demand for used cars is still greater than the supply. The consumer is on the hunt for used cars, among other things, because the delivery of new cars – partly as a result of the chip shortage – is not exactly smooth. The high demand for used cars also means that the total number of used cars for sale is decreasing. According to Aumacon, 633,798 used cars were sold in the Netherlands in the first half of 2022, 10.7 percent less than in the same period a year earlier.
