Since 28 January there is free choice of modem, so you are not dependent on the modem that your provider prescribes. With the FRITZ!Box 6660 cable, AVM has introduced a modem router that is suitable for any cable connection and where all the functionalities of a FRITZ!Box are now also available on a cable connection.

Many consumers were stuck with the modem they receive from their provider. But that will no longer be necessary from January 28, 2022, because the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) has determined that consumers and companies in the Netherlands can choose their own modem.
One of the manufacturers that responds to this is AVM, the German communication specialist whose products we regularly test, such as the AVM FRITZ!Repeater 6000. AVM now comes with a new FRITZ! product, namely the FRITZ!Box 6660 cable.

Specifications FRITZ!Box 6660 cable
The AVM FRITZ!Box 6660 cable is a router with an integrated cable modem for gigabit speeds on any cable connection from any provider, and all the FRITZ!Box features are available on it. It features a blazing-fast 2.5 gigabit LAN connection for gigabit speeds on the cable connection and for advanced applications such as NAS or to connect a switch. It supports DOCSIS 3.1 with 2×2 OFDM channel bundling and has 4 fast gigabit LAN connections for computers, televisions and other network devices. In addition, it has 1 analog telephone connection & 1 USB 2.0 connection for storage media (NAS), network printers and dongles for mobile internet.
The FRITZ!Box 6660 cable has Wi-Fi 6 up to 2,400 Mbit/s (5 GHz) and 600 Mbit/s (2.4 GHz) and a VoIP PBX with DECT base for up to 6 cordless telephones. This means wireless telephony with the option of controlling smart home applications.
Finally, the media server makes music, photos and videos available to devices in the home network (SMB, FTP, UPnP AV), with MyFRITZ! Secure access to your own FRITZ!Box anywhere and easy access to all files in the network with FRITZ!NAS.

Mesh Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi 6 takes into account the growing number of Wi-Fi devices and is therefore prepared for the highest demands in the home network. Distributed WiFi points, such as FRITZ!Repeaters, are merged into one smart WiFi network in the mesh WiFi network. The FRITZ!Box 6660 is intended to ensure that the connection is optimal everywhere in the house.

Free modem choice
Consumers now have a free modem choice. Due to the new regulations of the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM), internet providers can no longer prescribe the use of specific standard modems. AVM has created a special website for consumers to help them make their choice. Free modem choice offers consumers the opportunity to choose a modem router that better suits their specific internet and WiFi needs and that gives access to functionality and security updates, such as the FRITZ!Box 6660 cable.
