BAC is working on Mono on hydrogen

The British Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) has been producing the Mono since 2011, a hardcore tearing iron with one central seat. BAC may be a small player, but that does not alter the fact that the manufacturer wants to take steps with a view to the future. Together with Viritech’s engineers who specialize in hydrogen, BAC is working on a Mono with fuel cell.

Viritech is a start-up that develops hydrogen powertrains for the automotive world, shipping and aviation and energy companies. BAC is teaming up with Viritec for a hydrogen-powered BAC Mono. Not an illogical choice, because the British government previously gave Viritech a subsidy to get started with hydrogen for ‘niche vehicles’. If there is one manufacturer that operates in an absolute niche, it is BAC. Viritech focuses mainly on lightweight batteries and structural pressure vessels, which presumably means that the hydrogen tanks will become an integral part of the car. After all, the slender body of the Mono does not offer much space to put in large tanks.

The images show a Mono with stickers that indicate that it is the FCEV. By 2030, the date on which many European governments will limit the sale of new cars with combustion engines, the project should in any case have come to fruition. BAC mainly aims for a car that is as light as possible and, in its own words, focuses on the driving experience. Whether the Mono on hydrogen will be a feasible idea in practice remains to be seen by 2030.
