Block emails in Gmail

Junk messages pollute the inbox. Block them and make sure they are no longer in the digital inbox in Gmail.

Gmail has many ways to keep unwanted messages out of the inbox. For example, the user can set filters, report a message as spam and block messages. This last option is useful if you often receive mail from the same sender, and unsubscribing from a mailing list, for example, is not applicable.

Block a specific sender like this:

  • surf to www.gmail.com and log in.
  • Click on an email from the sender you want to block.
  • The email opens. Click the ‘More’ button at the top right. That’s the icon with the three dots.
  • Click on ‘Block X’. The X stands for the sender of the email.
  • Click in the small window on To block.

Future emails from the sender are automatically considered spam. They no longer show up in your Inbox.

It is always possible that you want mail from that sender at a later time. Then unblock it again:

  • Click on the map in the left bar spam.
  • If you don’t see this folder, scroll down a bit first.
  • Look up an e-mail from the relevant sender in the ‘Spam’ folder.
  • Click on the white square box to the left of the email.
  • Above the list of emails, click No spam.

All emails from that sender are returned to the inbox. Future mails will no longer be moved to the ‘Spam’ folder.
