BMW expands in Mexico: ready for the Neue Klasse

Since 2019, there has been a large BMW Group factory in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The 3-Series Sedan, 2-Series Coupé and the M2 models are currently rolling off the production line. From 2027, electric BMWs should also see the light of day. This is not about EVs like the i4 or i7, but about models of BMW’s new Neue Klasse. This includes an electric equivalent of the 3-series.

The Mexican BMW factory will have an additional production line where batteries for the Neue Klasse models will be built. In addition, BMW says it will expand the part of the factory where it produces the bodies. In total, BMW is pumping €800 billion into the factory to prepare it for the arrival of the New Class EVs. By the way, you don’t have to wait until 2027 to see the first electric BMWs of the Neue Klasse on the road. In Hungary, BMW will start building the first electric SUV of this new model series at the end of next year. In 2026, the starting gun will sound in Munich for the production of an electric sedan, the aforementioned electric alternative to the 3 Series.

The batteries that will be used in BMW’s new electric model family are ones with round battery cells. According to BMW, such cells offer 20 percent greater energy density than traditional cells and can be charged up to 30 percent faster. According to the brand, EVs with these batteries have a 30 percent greater range than comparable cars with traditional cells.
