Although the BMW 3-series was completely renewed a year and a half ago, the complete 4-series still has to make do with technology from the previous generation. In Munich, however, a lot of work is being done on a new 4-series Coupé, Cabrio and Gran Coupé and it is the first that BMW today is publishing an extensive photo series and the first information about.
BMW places an extensive photo package of the 4-series Coupé on its digital channels, a set of photos accompanied by interesting information. Although the 4 Series Coupé also hides its true lines in these photos under a white-black camouflage suit, it is refreshing to see the car in razor-sharp images. All three body styles of the 4 series have already been caught several times, including on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and therefore always remained at some distance from our spy photographer.
Although the previous generation 4-series already had a different front from the current 3-series, the difference between the muzzle of the current 3-series and the new 4-series is greater than ever. The Concept 4, shown at the IAA in Frankfurt last year, already gave an indication of this, and this new set of photos also shows a car with a truly immense kidney grille. The differences between the fronts of the two is even stronger than it was 15 years ago between the E90 / E91 (sedan and Touring) and the E92 and E93 (Coupé and Cabrio). That does not seem for nothing. According to BMW, the 4-series Coupé is more independent than ever before, although the majority of the technology will of course come from the 3-series.
The 4 Series Coupé is a total of 5.7 centimeters lower than its four-door sedan brother, something that has a positive effect on the center of gravity, among other things. That is namely 2.1 centimeters lower than that of the 3-series. The Coupé’s cW value is 0.015 more favorable than that of its four-door relative. Furthermore, not only is the track width of the new 4-series Coupé at the rear 2.3 centimeters wider than that of the 3-series, the suspension geometry is also more focused on sportiness. For example, the wheel flight (camber) at the front is different from the sedan. The front wheel is further inwards at the top, which means that the bottom of the wheel is just further outwards. In addition, the 4 Series gets sportier tuned dampers, modified struts and various reinforcements at the rear axle to set the car apart from its braver sedan and station brothers.
BMW is already talking about the arrival of the M440i xDrive, until the arrival of a hardcore M4, the provisional top version of the 4-series range. This gets the famous 374 hp and 500 Nm strong six-cylinder behind the striking grille, and thanks to 48v mild hybrid technology, it will temporarily have 11 hp extra. This four-wheel drive variant is paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The 3-series sedan sprints with this drivetrain in 4.4 counts to a speed of 100 km / h. For comparison, the previous M3, a rear-wheel drive, took 4.1 seconds for the same sprint. Naturally, more quietly set petrol and diesel engines are also coming to the new 4-series. We expect all the ins and outs later this year!
