It is still a guess as to what exactly has been adjusted under the skin by the Germans, but 10 years after the launch of the R nineT, BMW Motorrad has presented its successor: the R12 nineT, which has the same characteristic oil / air-cooled boxertwin, but than with slightly more displacement.

According to BMW, the new R12 NineT is just as puristic, powerful classic Roadster as its predecessor, the R nineT. And it offers many options and almost endless possibilities for personalization. says BMW.

Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad:

“The R nineT and its personalization concept laid the foundation for the new Heritage experience for BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary. The model has become a pillar of our model range. The new R 12 nineT is the continuation of this success story based on the rich history of the legendary BMW boxer engines. The R 12 nineT has an even more classic and minimalist design and offers even more freedom for personalization as well as new and innovative technology.”

In the summary press information, BMW speaks of a 1200 cc boxer engine, with a new air filter housing and exhaust system for ‘classic’ driving pleasure, continuing the 100-year boxer engine tradition. The very first BMW, the R32, was also a boxer twin. The number 12 in the model designation refers to the engine size, as with many other models from BMW Motorrad’s rich history, including the current R 18.

According to BMW, the new R 12 nineT combines even more than its predecessor the tough character of the boxer engine and the design of traditional motorcycles with innovative technology and a modular concept that offers maximum possibilities for personalization. Everything is even more reduced to the essentials, which ensures a high emotional appeal. A purist, classic look and attention to detail were at the top of the priority list when designing this motorcycle.

Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad:

“The purist design language is dominated by a clear line from the tank through the buddy seat to the rear. In the same style as the traditional /5 or the legendary R 90 S from the 1970s. At first glance, the tank is a classic BMW boxer tank, with the typical curve at the bottom and classic contact points for the knees. The new R 12 nineT is also equipped with side covers, in the triangles of the frame, for an authentic Roadster look. That too is a reference to the BMW motorcycles of the 1970s.”

The great attention to detail is evident in the front mudguard, the LED headlight with black surround and the two round instruments in the traditional style of days gone by. True to tradition, there are many customization options with the Original BMW Motorrad Accessories range. For personalization purposes, the new R 12 nineT also features an LED rear light integrated into the seat, making it easy to short-tail the bike.

In the second half of 2023, BMW Motorrad will announce more information about the new BMW R 12 nineT.
