In the Netherlands, BMW Motorrad may be the market leader after 13 years, but internationally the Germans have done very well over the past year. In its anniversary year, BMW Motorrad set a new sales record and delivered 209,257 motorcycles and scooters to customers, an increase of 3.1%.
According to BMW, the regions of Europe, Asia and Latin America in particular made a significant contribution with record figures to BMW Motorrad’s sales record last year. According to the Germans, the sales success is due to the strong product portfolio, with models such as the M 1000 R and the new Touring icon the R 1300 GS.
“I would like to thank our customers around the world for the great trust they have placed in us again in 2023. With a record result in our anniversary year, BMW Motorrad remains number one in the world in the premium motorcycle and scooter segment and once again proves the brand’s successful strategic orientation.
Our market leadership in many segments is based on innovation leadership, our highly attractive product range and our strong brand. Based on these three key success factors, BMW Motorrad is in an ideal position and I have great confidence in the year 2024.”
With 116,012 motorcycles and scooters (+4.7%) sold, Europe remains by far the most important sales market for BMW Motorrad. Home country Germany (obviously) remained the strongest individual market with 24,176 (+0.2%) units sold, followed by France (21,668 units / +2.1%), Italy (16,179 units / +3.3%) and Spain ( 12,716 units / +1.7%).
The former Eastern Europe provided a pleasant surprise with total sales of 6,000 units, an increase of 105.4% and therefore more than double the year before.
In other regions, several countries ended the year with record figures. In Asia (47,061 units / +1.6%), both China (15,832 units / +2.8%) and India (8,768 units / +20.4% achieved their best ever results. Brazil recorded a record number of 14,106 units (+ 8.1%), in Mexico 7,088 units (+6.8%) were sold.
The boxer models R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure remained the most important models in the BMW line-up, with sales of around 56,000 units. Together with the new R 1300 GS (4,528 units), which has been on sale since autumn 2023, the three GS models have made a significant contribution to BMW Motorrad’s record sales of 60,535 units, an increase of 1.62%.
With a total of 62,834 units (+3.2%), the F series with two-cylinder engines and the G models with single-cylinder engines contribute significantly to the sales result. The F 750 GS in particular was extremely popular, with 11,064 units sold worldwide. That’s quite remarkable, because in the Netherlands the F and G models don’t do much at all.
“The sales record in our anniversary year is both an honor and an obligation. With numerous new, innovative models and products for our customers, we at BMW Motorrad will do everything we can to build on this record year and our leading position in the premium segment in 2024. Our new GS models in particular will play an important role here. This year, our customers and fans can once again look forward to numerous world premieres, highlights, events and emotionally charged motorcycle offers.”
