BMW Motorrad supplies motorcycles for Rijkswaterstaat road inspectors

BMW Motorrad Netherlands has won another tender. This time Rijkswaterstaat, which in the coming weeks will have access to BMW R 1250 RT-p models, derived from the R 1250 RT. The engines will support Rijkswaterstaat’s road inspectors in their important task of keeping Dutch roads safe and accessible.

Rijkswaterstaat requires a motorcycle to meet specific requirements in terms of speed and maneuverability. The driving characteristics must be smooth and stable, both at low speeds and at the maximum permitted speed plus 40 km/h (170 km/h). In addition, the motorcycle must have sufficient acceleration to be able to safely return to traffic from the emergency lane.

The motorcycle must also be agile enough to be able to drive smoothly and controlled between traffic jams, even at maximum speed. The suspension must be adjustable to adapt the motorcycle to the load.

The motorcycle must be clearly visible and recognizable in all situations, regardless of weather conditions. To achieve this, there must be sufficient surface area on the cockpit, tank and cases to apply striping. The motorcycle must also be equipped as standard with a fairing on which this striping can be placed. In addition, the motorcycle must have a comfortable and adjustable seating position, as well as an electrically adjustable windshield that provides maximum protection against wind and weather.

“Rijkswaterstaat has made a conscious choice to deploy road inspectors on motorcycles. Motorcycles bring agility and flexibility, essential advantages that enable our road inspectors to act quickly.” Says Robert-Jaap Voorn, Director of Road Traffic Management at Rijkswaterstaat. “The handover of our new BMW R 1250 RT-p motorcycles marks a new phase in our ongoing commitment to quality. Today, it is with pride and satisfaction that we celebrate the growth of our capabilities with the arrival of the latest motorcycles in our fleet.”

Gerbrand Jonker, national manager for mobility within Road Traffic Management, is also pleased with receiving the new motorcycles. “How nice is it that the rider of the motorcycle with the most kilometers is the very first to receive the keys to the new BMW R 1250 RT-p. With more than 200,000 kilometers on the clock, this is of course more than deserved and I wish all colleagues safe motorcycle kilometers on our new motorcycles.”

In the Netherlands, the basic motorcycle, the BMW R 1250 RT-p, is being further developed to exactly meet the wishes of Rijkswaterstaat. In close collaboration with specialist HSC in Nieuw-Vennep, the motorcycle is constructed in such a way that it can serve as the most optimal workplace that the road inspector could wish for.

“We are once again honored that Rijkswaterstaat has chosen us as a trusted partner and that we can continue our collaboration,” says Tom Crooijmans, Head of BMW Motorrad at BMW Group Netherlands. “Our long-standing experience in supplying specialized motorcycles for government services underlines our commitment to quality and service. The BMW R 1250 RT-p offers Rijkswaterstaat road inspectors the reliability and performance essential for their important work.”

BMW Motorrad also supplies national and international semi-governmental organizations with the very best customization available. With an enormous source of expertise, BMW Motorrad is able to develop the best motorcycles for, for example, various police and fire brigades and escort services, so that government officials all over the world can optimally fulfill their duties.

Thanks to a strong dealer network, the BMW R 1250 RT-p developed for Rijkswaterstaat can be offered at any BMW Motorrad dealer for maintenance or (emergency) repairs. For years, the employees in the workshops of the BMW Motorrad dealers have been proving their services and professionalism. Each workshop is qualified and trained to keep the motorcycles of government agencies and the specific equipment of the motorcycles in top condition to ensure the usability of the BMW motorcycles.
