If sustainable – and economical – driving is close to your heart, consider a BMW plug-in hybrid. These models are now supported by a new feature: eDrive Zone.

If you drive into the city center of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague from today with your BMW plug-in hybrid, the car will automatically switch to electric driving. That is clean, silent and economical in consumption. The BMW Group has now taken the new eDrive Zone function into use.

Plug-in hybrid models are increasingly being ordered new. BMW currently offers no fewer than nine of these plug-in hybrids, from the 225xe Active Tourer to the X5 xDrive45e; the last copies of the no longer buildable i8 are still available. With the xDrive45e you can theoretically already go up to 90 km, more than enough for commuting. To achieve the greatest environmental benefits, drivers of these models should drive as many kilometers as possible purely electrically. The new function helps with this.

The new eDrive Zones app is today automatically sent ‘over the air’ to the appropriate plug-in hybrid BMWs and is then turned on as standard. New plug-in BMWs also feature. In the app, the GPS coordinates are recorded around the inner cities of the four major Dutch cities. As soon as the BMW driver enters one of these zones, the car switches to fully electric driving mode. The driver receives a notification. The app also works in five neighboring countries, including Germany, Belgium and France.

Reward

From July, a reward system will be added, BMW Points. As a BMW driver, you will receive points for each electrically driven kilometer, the kilometers within the eDrive Zones count extra heavily. The saved points can then be exchanged for, for example, loading credit. BMW eDrive Zones is the result of a collaboration between the car manufacturer and the city of Rotterdam and Erasmus University.
