BMW unveils M 1000 R: 210 hp Hypernaked

After the engine was leaked through homologation documents a few weeks ago, BMW has now officially lifted the curtain on the completely new M 1000 R, the second model of the M family. The 2023 M 1000 R delivers a top power of 210 hp with a curb weight of only 199 kilograms, making it the strongest Hypernaked on the market in one fell swoop.

BMW unveils M 1000 R: 210 hp Hypernaked

If we wrote in our previous report that the M 1000 R would have a top power of 207 hp at 13,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 119 Nm at 11,000 rpm, those figures turn out to be even bolder. Hold on tight: the 999cc inline four, taken over from the M 1000 RR, delivers 210 hp at 13,750 rpm, but on the other hand, maximum torque is just 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm.

Compared to the S 1000 R, you’re talking about an increase in power of no less than 45 hp, which is delivered at a higher speed. The M 1000 R also revs more than the S 1000 R, with the M the limiter only ends at 14,600 rpm. By applying a larger rear sprocket (47 teeth instead of 45 teeth), the final drive has been shortened, and the ratio of the 4th, 5th and 6th gears has also been made shorter.

Following on from the M 1000 RR and the S 1000 RR renewed for 2023, BMW Motorrad has also equipped the M 1000 R with aerodynamic winglets, which should suppress the unavoidable wheelie tendency with 210 hp and provide more stability when braking. According to BMW, the effect is already noticeable at 160 km/h, at 220 km/h the winglets generate 11 kilos of pressure on the front wheel.

The M 1000 R, which is simply called the MR by BMW Motorrad, naturally has fully electronically controlled suspension, which the Germans call Dynamic Damper Control (DDC). The aluminum bridge frame is taken from the S 1000 R and fitted at the front with a 45 mm upside down fork, the lower fork legs of which have been adapted to the new M brake calipers.

After the M 1000 RR, the M 1000 R is the second BMW motorcycle with an M braking system. BMW Motorrad does not go into technical details, but only says that the experience gained in the Superbike World Championship has been incorporated into the braking system. The M calipers stand out with a blue coating and the famous M logo.

Naturally, the new M 1000 R has very light forged aluminum wheels as standard, the optional M Competition Package these even lighter M Carbon wheels with specially designed chamfers. And back to the brakes: the M 1000 R is equipped with the new Brake Slide Assist, which allows you to make controlled slides when braking into the bend.

From the saddle you have a view of the well-known 6.5″ TFT color display, which shows similarities in layout with that of the M 1000 RR, including an M startup animation on contact. The enlarged view of the red zone during the warm-up phase in the tachometer is a new function.Optional is the use of driving and engine data via the M GPS Laptrigger and the M GPS Datalogger by entering an activation code in the OBD interface of the instrumentation.

Compared to the S 1000 R, the M 1000 R has a slightly wider handlebar and to keep the front calm, BMW Motorrad has now also provided a steering damper. Bar-end mirrors are mounted on the ends of the handlebars, the handlebar clamps are machined aluminum like the top triple clamp, the MR also has a headlight with illuminated M logo and a short number plate holder.

In terms of electronics, the M 1000 R is the cream of the crop, with no less than 7 riding modes: Rain, Road, Dynamic, Race and Race Pro1-3, as well as the latest generation of Dynamic Traction Control DTC and DTC Wheelie Control controlled by the well-known 6-axis IMU. Throttle response can be adjusted in 3 positions, the Engine Brake now has three settings in Race Pro mode. Naturally, the MR is equipped with the Shift Assist Pro quickshifter.

The M 1000 R is available in two M color schemes: the well-known Lightwhite non-metallic / M Motorsport and the dark variant Blackstorm metallic / M Motorsport, for the price tag from € 25,500. Including M Competition Package, that is € 31,990.
