BMW unveils M 1000 XR: 201 hp über Crossover

You might not think it, but it has already been 5 years since BMW Motorrad launched the M model strategy in 2018. Initially in the form of M-specific packages and M Performance Parts, followed by specific M models as the ultimate version of existing models: the M 1000 RR as an über version of the S 1000 RR, followed by the M 1000 R as an über version of the S 1000 R.

In the year that BMW Motorrad celebrates its 100th anniversary, the dynamic philosophy of what the Germans call the world’s most powerful letter has now been translated into the M 1000 XR, the M XR for short. According to BMW Motorrad, M is synonymous with the racing successes and fascination of high-performance BMW models, intended for riders who place particularly high demands on performance, exclusivity and individuality.

“The M 1000 XR, or M XR for short, is the third M model from BMW Motorrad. Based on the existing S 1000 make their mark everywhere, on country roads as well as on long journeys and on the race track,” says Dominik Blass, M 1000 XR Product Manager.

What are those achievements? BMW Motorrad already announced these in the first reports: a top power of 201 hp and a dry weight of 223 kilos, which is even 1 hp more than announced in June. According to the Germans, the M

In terms of power, the M In fact, compared to the S 1000 XR, only 3 kilos of weight have been saved.

The beating heart of the M of 113 Nm at 11,000 rpm has remained the same. The maximum speed is 14,600 rpm.

Compared to the S 1000 XR, a larger rear sprocket has been used (47 teeth instead of 45), which makes the M In addition, the gear ratios of the 4th, 5th and 6th gears are also shorter compared to those of the BMW S 1000 XR, resulting in better acceleration even in the highest gears.

Aerodynamics received a lot of attention when designing the BMW M XR. Specific
M winglets at the front of the fairing provide more downforce and therefore more stable driving behavior at high speeds. From 100 km/h, the M winglets already generate more pressure on the front wheel. The downforce reaches a value of approximately 12 kg at 220 km/h.

According to BMW, the chassis of the M New is the option to adjust the spring preload of the front fork together with the standard Dynamic Damping Control (DDC). There is no mention of the swingarm and monoshock.

Just like the BMW M 1000 RR and M 1000 R, the M XR is also equipped with an M braking system. The development used the experiences with the BMW Motorrad factory racers in the Superbike World Championship. The M brake calipers have an anodized coating and the famous M logo.

Lightweight forged aluminum wheels are standard. Those who choose the M Competition package will receive the exclusive M Carbon wheels, including newly designed M tape on the rim edge. And back to the brakes, where BMW has applied Brake Slide Assist, which enables controlled drifting when braking into a corner.

Speaking of electronics: the M four adjustable throttle response characteristics for optimal response and 3-way adjustable Engine Brake in Race Pro mode.

BMW would not be BMW if no optional package would have been put together, knowing that 99% of all models always go out the door with full options. In addition to the already mentioned M Carbon wheels, the optional M Competition package includes M Carbon parts such as the chain guard, the side panels, the front fender, the inner cover and the cover for the starter and steering lock button. The package also includes the fully adjustable M Rider footrest system, passenger footrests and the M GPS Laptrigger (activation code).
