BMW XM Label Red fastest SUV on Pikes Peak, or not?

Second attempt successful

BMW XM Label Red fastest SUV on Pikes Peak, or not?

The BMW XM has set a record on the Pikes Peak hill climb. It just doesn’t seem quite the record the brand had in mind…

Just over a year ago, Lamborghini clocked a new record time for SUVs on the hill climb of Pikes Peak with the Urus Performante (which had not yet been unveiled at the time). It took the Italian giant ten minutes and 32 seconds, a time that BMW was happy to erase from the top of the time list with its XM. That’s why it started last summer with a record attempt with the BMW XM Label Red, the strongest version of the XM. That just didn’t go very well, as you could see last week. The XM slid off the road with understeer and crashed into (or actually straight through) a tree.

As we announced last week, part two was in the works. As it turns out, it is not entirely surprising that BMW finally tore up the mountain again with an XM Label Red and now with success. Still, it is probably not quite the success the brand had hoped for. The BMW XM crossed the finish line after ten minutes and 48 seconds. So he added another sixteen seconds to the Urus Performante. BMW proudly reports that it is ‘the fastest hybrid SUV on Pikes Peak’ in that time. That’s right, but the fastest SUV (regardless of the drivetrain) is still the Urus. We are curious whether there will be a part three…
