The available subsidy for new EVs will be only € 1.1 million in 2021, industry organization Bovag reports. The subsidy for used electric cars is less popular. According to the interest group, the government must re-examine the subsidy scheme to prevent the breakthrough of electric driving from stagnating.
This year, the total size of the subsidy fund for new EVs was € 10 million. Every buyer of a new EV receives € 4,000, which meant that the budget was sufficient for 2,500 cars. That money was through in record time. Originally, a subsidy of € 14.4 million was made available to buyers of new EVs in 2021. This year, however, it was still possible to make use of the so-called transfer scheme, whereby the subsidy from next year was brought forward. The cabinet put an end to that arrangement in October, but the damage had already been done: for the whole of 2021, only € 1.1 million is available for new EVs, representing 275 cars. The subsidy desk will be open again from 4 January, but it is expected that this money will be used up within a few days.
The latter means that many consumers have to wait until 2022 if they want to claim a subsidy for a new EV. That year, the budget is again a lot larger with € 18.3 million. A total of € 141 million has been made available for new EVs up to and including 2025, but the Bovag would rather see the cabinet shift the budgets for the coming years forward. According to the trade association, it is precisely now important that the sale of EVs is boosted. The Bovag therefore does not agree with the allocation of the subsidy budget for new EVs, which becomes more generous as the years progress.

Used EVs
With the used EVs, things are going a lot less quickly with the subsidy, even this year there is still € 758,000 of the total budget of € 7.2 million in the pot. That amount is good for 379 cars. Those who still want to use this subsidy pot have until December 31st 12:00 to submit an application. Next year, an amount of € 13.5 million has been set aside for used EVs. This means that 6,750 cars can be subsidized. Only cars purchased on or after January 1, 2021 are eligible for that subsidy.
