Bovag is cracking policy on EV subsidies

The purchase subsidy for new electric cars has already ended for this year. A large part was already consumed in 2020. Bovag is critical of the course of events.

In 2020 it was possible to receive € 4,000 purchase subsidy for the purchase of a new fully electric car. There was such a run for it that the government decided to use the pot available for 2021 as well. The result: of the € 14.4 million that was available for this year, almost everything was consumed in 2020. That is why there was only € 1.1 million left for this year and that has already been spent in one day. Now we have to wait for January 1, 2022 before money is made available again, because next year’s pot will not be ‘brought forward’.

Bovag thinks the strange policy that the government has promised that € 252 million will be available until 2025, but now it will have to wait almost a full year to be able to use it at all. “It is crazy to say that a subsidy scheme that was intended for a full year would be exhausted, while there is still money on the shelf,” said spokesman Tom Huyskens in conversation with the AD.

The total annual subsidy amount available will increase every year up to and including 2025, while it is expected that electric cars will become cheaper on average. Right now, the subsidy is still very important to convince people, it may be less relevant later. According to Bovag, it makes more sense not to make the subsidy available again until 2022. The trade association hopes that the next cabinet will implement a different policy in this regard.
