BP and Piaggio join forces to accelerate electrification

These vehicles (electric motorcycles, motor scooters and compact commercial vehicles) are currently the most electrified vehicle class worldwide, according to Piaggio, with 44% of total sales and 25% of the existing global fleet (about 250 million vehicles) already electric.

It is estimated that the share of electric vehicles will rise to more than 80% of vehicle sales by 2024 and the number of electric two- and three-wheelers worldwide could triple to 750 million.

Combining Piaggio’s comprehensive electric vehicle manufacturing and infrastructure management capabilities with BP’s expertise and global reach, the companies aim to support the growing adoption of electric two- and three-wheelers worldwide to address urban traffic problems. suits and reduce pollution in urban areas.

Richard Bartlett, senior vice president, future mobility & solutions, BP:
“The huge and fast-growing two- and three-wheeler market is already leading the way in electrification and we see great potential for continued growth in both Asia and Europe.

Working closely with global market leader Piaggio Group, we will strive to develop and deliver the innovative services that customers will need. This will support the growth of fast and comfortable urban mobility with zero-emission vehicles, reducing air pollution and helping cities in their efforts to become fully decarbonised.”

Michele Colaninno, chief of strategy and product, Piaggio Group:
“The collaboration with bp will help us realize our idea and offer for a mobility revolution. To achieve this goal, the large-scale adoption of electric vehicles, such as motorcycles, motor scooters and compact commercial vehicles equipped with battery exchange technology or a plug-in system in charging, encouraging more sustainable battery life-cycle management and respect for the environment. Partnering with BP is a great starting point to strengthen our strategy.”

Under their joint letter of intent, Piaggio Group and BP, along with Indian affiliate Jio-bp, will explore opportunities to work together to provide charging and battery exchange stations, and to develop comprehensive services such as ‘Battery as a Service (BaaS)’ (leasing, management and recycling of vehicle batteries) and ‘Vehicle as a Service (VaaS)’ (leasing, repairs, maintenance and smart energy management of these vehicles).

Initial efforts and focus will be on India, where Jio-bp and Piaggio are already developing systems for electric vehicles. The companies also plan to explore opportunities in the rest of Asia (China, Indonesia and Vietnam) and in Europe.

Ease of use and mobility are an important part of BP’s strategy. Working closely with innovative partners, BP is committed to developing new business models and services that help realize the future of mobility, energy and services for customers. Electrification is central to BP’s vision for mobility and they are expanding their charging operations around the world, aiming to have more than 70,000 public charging points by 2030.

Piaggio Group has been a pioneer of electric mobility since the mid-1970s and is constantly seeking the most technologically advanced solutions, developed in their own R&D centers around the world. They see the combination of robotics and software as the key to improving the future mobility systems in cities and want to continue to play a leading role in this revolution with their e-vehicle production activities and their infrastructure management.
