As a result of the war in Ukraine, energy prices and therefore fuel prices are skyrocketing. It seems to want to take measures to remedy the ever-rising prices and declining purchasing power as a result.

According to the AD, the cabinet wants to reduce the VAT on gas and electricity from the high VAT rate of 21 percent to the low rate of 9 percent. In addition, the cabinet would consider a reduction in excise duties on both petrol and diesel, although the amount of the discount to be implemented has not yet been determined, according to the sources on which AD relies. The measures could be introduced on 1 July this year, initially for a period of six months.

The prices of gas and electricity, like those of fuel for cars, were already high at the end of last year, but the war in Ukraine has rapidly pushed prices to enormous heights. The average national suggested retail price (GLA) of a liter of Euro95 (E10) rose from around €2.20 to €2.50 in less than two weeks. The GLA of a liter of diesel has increased even faster if possible and is close to the recommended retail price of a liter of petrol. At the time of writing, the average national suggested retail price for a liter of diesel is €2.36. The GLA of a liter of Euro98 (E5) today is no less than €2.59, consumer collective UnitedConsumers has calculated that the average national recommended price of fuel is based on the average recommended price charged by the largest oil companies.
