Camera has problems through iOS 18
Is the lens of your iPhone no longer working properly? In that case, the camera probably suffers from a software error in iOS 18. This bug appears black surfaces over photos that are taken with the iPhone. It is not possible to remove these black squares or rectangles afterwards, making the image unusable. The cause of the software fault is still unknown.
The black surfaces in the photos seem to appear in random places. The number of squares or rectangles also depends on the image. With some photos, one or two black surfaces appear, other images are not bothered by the camera problems. In any case, it is a software error in iOS 18, which ensures that the camera adds black areas to photos. With iOS 17 (and earlier) the problem does not play as far as is known.
Large software
Apple has already received many complaints from users who have experienced problems with the camera of their iPhone since installing iOS 18. It seems to be a software error, with a large part of the iPhones affected with iOS 18. The black surfaces on photos are in any case challenged with users with an iPhone SE 2022, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.
It is therefore not a hardware problem with the camera of a specific iPhone series. Incidentally, not all iPhones that run on iOS 18 suffer from the software error. It is unknown how many devices have to do with the bug in iOS 18. The black surfaces appear sporadically with the devices with the software fault, so they are not visible on every photo. It is therefore possible that you only have a number of images with these black spots, while the rest of your photos have succeeded.
Apple is aware of error in iOS 18

It didn’t matter how old (or new) the device is, because the problem also occurs with a brand new iPhone 16 Pro. The fact that the camera problems also play with older models means in any case that it is an error in the software. It is striking that Apple has been aware of this software error for months, because the problem has been playing since the release of iOS 18.
In the meantime, iOS 18.1, iOS 18.2, iOS 18.3 and iOS 18.4 have already appeared, but the problem with the camera has still not been remedied. It is therefore to be hoped that the company will work on an interim update in the background, because the software fault affects a lot of iPhones. For the time being there is no solution to the problem, so it is advisable to properly check the photos you take. Do you see a black square or rectangle? Then take the photo again, because you cannot remove this black surface in the post -processing. It is unclear whether that will be possible in the future.
