‘Canada will stop selling new fuel cars by 2035’

Are people in North America still crazy about cars with (big) fuel engines? Yes, but not all of North America is the same in that respect. In Canada, it appears that a ban on new cars with only a fuel engine will be introduced by 2035.

When you think of cars in North America, you may mainly think of huge pickups and… muscle cars. However, it makes quite a difference where in North America you are. For example, there are already many (partly) electric cars on the road in various places in the United States, for example in California. In Canada they are a bit further along in that regard, because plug-in cars are on their way to a market share of around 10 percent this year. That is not nearly enough for the progressive government of Canada, because according to Reuters Canada is heading towards a ban on the sale of new fuel cars.

By 2035, the sale of new cars with only combustion engines should be over. This means that only fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid cars and hydrogen cars may be sold. The sales share of these cars must be 20 percent in 2026, 60 percent in 2030 and 100 percent in 2035. The plans have not yet been officially announced, but insiders report Reuters that an official announcement will follow this week.
