‘CarPlay is unsafe’: this car brand has already stopped using it

CarPlay is becoming increasingly popular, but according to a car brand it also leads to unsafe driving behavior. CarPlay will therefore soon disappear in these cars.

This car brand is stopping CarPlay

Parent company General Motors (GM) has announced that it will stop using Apple’s CarPlay. General Motors is behind car brands such as Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. Opel was also previously part of General Motors, but that brand was sold to Peugeot Citroën in 2017. Cars manufactured by General Motors from next year will no longer support CarPlay.

Instead, the company will switch to its own operating system, which General Motors says is more secure. CarPlay is dependent on an iPhone and can therefore sometimes malfunction according to the car brand. General Motors claims that as a result of these glitches, drivers are more likely to use their phones, which in turn leads to unsafe driving behavior. According to the car brand, this is less the case with its own system.

The question remains to what extent General Motors’ claims are correct, because the company has not conducted any research into this. So no data has been collected, making it unclear whether a proprietary operating system does indeed lead to safer driving behavior. In addition, the car brand mentions that CarPlay is faltering, while the operating system has few problems.

In practice, the opposite can happen. In that case, the driver is more likely to use an iPhone because there is no CarPlay. CarPlay now offers the option to make hands-free calls and execute commands with Siri. These options disappear as soon as the car brand bans CarPlay. The question therefore remains whether a proprietary operating system leads to safer driving behavior.

The actual reason probably has to do with the revenue model behind General Motors’ operating system. You can take out a subscription to various services, from which the car brand can earn a lot of money. By attracting more drivers to their own operating system, more subscriptions are taken out. These are revenues that the car brand would miss out on with CarPlay.

More data for GM

Another important reason to switch to your own operating system is data collection. General Motors wants to use driver data to map driving behavior more clearly. According to the car brand, it is less easy to collect this data with CarPlay, partly due to Apple’s privacy rules. General Motors will therefore try to avoid this from next year.

General Motors cars produced from 2024 onwards will no longer support CarPlay, starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer. For the time being, the new operating system will only come to new GM electric cars. Petrol and diesel cars still receive support for CarPlay.

Do you currently have a General Motors car with CarPlay support? Don’t worry, because CarPlay will continue to work in your car even after 2024.
