Although the Caterham Seven 170 itself is extremely modest in its kind, Caterham itself likes to take the fore with it. It does this in a special way: it built one 170 at the top of a tower.
It doesn’t help you much, but it is striking what Caterham has done. Caterham went to Brighton with some factory workers and crates full of parts. In addition to a famous pier, this coastal town also has the British Airways i360 pod, which is a round observation deck on a tower that can be raised in its entirety. The Caterham employees brought everything needed to build a copy of the Seven 170 unveiled last week, then built the entire car in the observation deck at the highest position. It was not a matter of screwing some parts together, no, really the whole car from the smallest screw. The whole process took six hours.
The i360’s observation deck hangs on its highest position at 137 meters above sea level, and Caterham claims a car has never been built so high above the ground. Something tells us they may be right about that, although the event doesn’t seem to be officially set as a record. It makes a difference that the Caterham Seven consists of relatively few parts and that the 170 is also a relatively small version of the Seven. Also handy is that the i360 pod can simply descend back to street level and the car can therefore also be removed in its entirety relatively easily.
