CBR starts trial with box in car of road pirates

Earlier this year, a parliamentary majority approved the idea of installing a box in the car of notorious traffic offenders to monitor their behaviour. The CBR has now started a test with such boxes.

If it is up to the House of Representatives, notorious traffic offenders will soon have a box in their car to be monitored. The judge can decide who is eligible for such a box, which can be used to monitor driving behavior and thus possibly reduce the risk of recurrence. The box functions as a lock, making the car unusable if someone goes wrong again. A group of about twenty people will be driving around with such a box for three months this summer. “That box registers the speed and any speeding violations. Our goal: to tackle serious traffic offenders more effectively,” a spokesman for the CBR said to the police. AD.

Bureau Beke from Arnhem will investigate for the CBR whether such a compulsory locker can really contribute to ‘braking’ anti-social driving behaviour. The biggest cause of accidents is still speeding, followed by alcohol and distraction. The study should be completed by mid-2024. “Whether the monitoring box can actually be introduced depends on the results of the pilot,” according to the CBR. “Various factors play a role in this: the technical and legal possibilities and the restrictions that privacy legislation entails. This takes time and thorough research.”
