A new Onvo every year
We were recently introduced to the first car from Nio’s new brand Onvo. Within the EV world, this is a relatively down-to-earth brand that tries to keep costs low by not providing models with technology that enables paving stone-crushing performance.
The L60 is the firstborn of Nio’s brand new Onvo brand. With Onvo, Nio says it focuses on usable and – it promises – affordable electric cars for families. Onvo’s models can fully benefit from the technology that Nio has in-house and also come onto the market with large battery packs, the L60 even with a 150 kWh model. Where Onvo saves? Including on the electric motors.
Although we do not yet know how powerful the Onvo L60 will be, we can already tell you that you should not expect bizarre sprint figures. Onvo chairman Alan Ai told Reuters that in order to save costs, Onvo gives priority to safety and comfort and considers the heading ‘speed and acceleration’ to be considerably less important. “People don’t need a family car to race with,” Ai explains. “It is important for people to avoid unnecessary costs such as those high performance Electric motors are saved.” By not installing such electric motors in its models, Onvo also hopes to keep insurance costs and maintenance costs lower, according to Ai.
The L60 is currently the only Onvo, but it doesn’t stop there. The brand would like to introduce a new model every year. All models should be price-wise comparable to equivalent fossil cars in terms of size and positioning.
