You double-click on a file and Windows immediately opens the correct program because the system keeps a list of programs that belong to certain file types. But sometimes the system does not know which program is suitable for a file type, and sometimes there are good reasons to change the existing assignment of default programs.
right click
After a system update, Windows overwrite or bluntly delete previously committed file type assignments. This makes your PC suddenly seem to have some form of memory loss. When you double-click on a file, the system no longer remembers what the appropriate program is, while you are sure that the correct application is on your PC. Before changing the default file type assignments, try right-clicking first. Right click on the file and choose the command Open with… That way you can see if the program you have in mind is available for this task. If you do not find a suitable program via the right mouse button, then click outside the dialog box, so that the list of programs is closed without selecting an application.
Default apps
To always open a certain file type with a specific program, you can modify the default application. For this you go in the Institutions nasty System / Apps and then you join the group Default apps. On this page you will see a number of commonly used file types and the apps that go with them. For example, click the button at photo viewer, you will see a list of obvious apps, where you simply tick your preference. For example, you see that the app photos is recommended by Windows 10 for images, but nothing prevents you from changing it.
By app or file type
For example, if you want to open all PDF files with Acrobat Reader, you use the option Default apps per app. Now you get the list of all applications that are on the system. Click on the desired app and the button To manage appears. You will then see a list of file types that you can link to the app. The other possibility is that you Default apps by file type chooses. That doesn’t work the other way around. With that choice you get a long list of all file types that Windows knows, with their default programs. For example, if you .pdf then you can select or change the desired default app.
