The sun rises for nothing: like all popular services, ChatGPT will probably add advertisements. You need to know this.
ChatGPT may receive advertisements
ChatGPT has had a paid version with more functions for some time, but it is still free to use. The free version has no advertisements for the time being, but this may change in the future. OpenAI wants to increase its profits.
In one interview Speaking to the Financial Times, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar said it cannot be ruled out that ChatGPT will show ads to non-paying users. She sees advertising as a way to increase profits. And that would be necessary because the costs of keeping AI servers running are high. OpenAI is currently valued at over $150 billion, but the company has spent $5 billion on AI training this year.
Selling ads on ChatGPT is a way to keep the platform available to free users. Earlier this year, OpenAI hired several ad executives from Meta and Google, confirming the company’s plans. However, Friar says OpenAI needs to think carefully about when and where ads are implemented. She also suggested that this won’t be in the near future. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is now said to be enthusiastic about the idea, although he has said in the past that he does not like advertisements and only sees them as a last resort.
ChatGPT Plus does not change
OpenAI currently charges $20 per month ChatGPT Plus. That’s a more advanced version of the chatbot that offers access to the latest language models, a higher message limit and image generation. There are also special subscriptions for teams and companies.
Earlier this year, Apple partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri (a feature that won’t be available in the Netherlands until sometime in 2025). There are sources saying that Apple did not pay for the deal. In any case, Apple will promote the ChatGPT Plus subscription from the iOS Settings app, which should boost subscriptions once the update is available.
