Starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, Apple is integrating ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence into the iPhone, iPad and Mac operating system. The big advantage of this is that ChatGPT is integrated at the system level, so you don’t have to install all kinds of extra apps.
Apple has been using artificial intelligence in iOS, iPadOS and macOS for years, an example of this is its search functions in the Photos app. Thanks to the arrival of Apple Intelligence, this is being expanded considerably and the GPT-4o data model will also be used in ChatGPT. This popular external service from OpenAI will become part of Apple Intelligence.

Apple Intelligence is a personal intelligence system for Mac, iPhone, and iPad that combines the power of generative models with a user’s individual context to create AI that’s both useful and relevant.
Apple Intelligence works at the system level, meaning that AI features will be available in almost all apps. This allows you to use artificial intelligence to write text or generate images. But beware, not every Mac, iPhone or iPad can use Apple Intelligence.

ChatGPT together with Siri
Together with Siri, ChatGPT will play a more important role. For example, you will soon be able to directly consult the chat robot via the voice assistant and ChatGPT will be used to request information about certain subjects. Think of consulting information about a certain dog breed to Siri.
The voice assistant can then tell you what the specific characteristics of the breed are. The information is requested from ChatGPT via Apple Intelligence if desired. Siri will always only consult the chat robot after you have given permission. You must do this for every question.
Generate text with Writing tools
In combination with Apple Intelligence, the user has access to the so-called ‘Writing Tools’, which you can use in any app.
This AI feature allows you to rewrite, check, improve and summarize texts. You can also adjust the tone of the text for more friendly or professional texts.
Writing Tools work natively on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS using Apple’s native AI tools. For even more freedom, you can also use this functionality using ChatGPT’s language models. You can also use ChatGPT’s image generator via Compose to generate styled images of your choice to accompany your text.
Improved privacy when using ChatGPT
When you use ChatGPT, your privacy is protected. For example, your IP address is hidden and OpenAI does not store your queries and requests. So your queries remain private and are not used to further train OpenAI language models.
This is the case when using ChatGPT directly via the online chatbot on the website. Then your entered commands are used to improve the language models of ChatGPT. Due to the collaboration with Apple, your commands are anonymous.
No ChatGPT subscription required
If you want to use ChatGPT in an app, you normally have to take out a paid subscription. After this, you will receive an API key, with which an app can access ChatGPT. For users of Apple Intelligence, such a subscription is no longer necessary. Through Apple Intelligence, you get access to the generative functions for text and images belonging to the GPT-4o data model.
Existing ChatGPT subscribers can link their account and use paid features directly from the apps. If you choose to link your own account, the ChatGPT data usage policy applies.
Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT Availability
All these developments and innovations are great, but will all Apple users be able to benefit from them? In the long term, yes, but unfortunately not in the short term. The generative model will first appear in beta on the devices and only later will the full version become functional. The beta version will be part of the English (US) version of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia this fall. Some features, software platforms and additional languages ​​will follow in the course of next year.
Apple Intelligence with ChatGPT works on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 or later. The device language and Siri must be set to English (US). It is not yet clear when we will be able to use Apple Intelligence in Dutch.
