Please note: this iPhone feature that is going viral is not real at all

A video is going viral on the Internet, showing an iPhone feature that isn’t real at all. This is what this fake feature is all about!

iPhone feature goes viral

Do you regularly watch short videos on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube? In that case, you will probably see plenty of useful tips for your iPhone. Videos regularly go viral on the internet explaining new features for the iPhone, iPad or Mac. This is an easy way to find out new settings for your Apple device, but not all videos.

It’s becoming increasingly common for videos to go viral highlighting iPhone features that don’t exist at all. With the advent of artificial intelligence, it has become much easier to create these types of fake videos. They are often eye-catching and therefore receive many views, while containing misleading or fake information. This also applies to an online video that is extremely popular at the moment. Check out the fake iPhone feature below:

Thermometer does not exist

Several popular videos on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube show the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max being used as a thermometer. You should find this function under ‘Settings > Accessibility’, but in practice it does not exist at all. The thermometer is not part of a new software version and is not a feature that Apple introduced with the iPhone 17 Pro or the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Do you see a video in which the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max are used as a thermometer? Then scroll quickly, because it is a fake video. Measuring the temperature requires a sensor, which is not built into any iPhone. To take temperature measurements you need an external accessory, such as a thermal camera for the iPhone. Apple itself does not offer this function, not even with the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

LiDAR scanner with the iPhone 17 Pro (Max).

This is how the LiDAR scanner works

It’s not surprising that the videos about the thermometer are going viral, as it’s said to be a useful and eye-catching iPhone feature. In the videos, the iPhone’s LiDAR scanner is used to take temperature measurements, while that is not possible at all. Yet the LiDAR scanner has a smart option, because you can use the feature to measure objects and determine distances.

The LiDAR scanner is the black dot on the back of the iPhone 12 Pro (Max) and newer. This is intended for recording depth, so that you can, for example, measure someone’s height or the dimensions of your table. The LiDAR scanner cannot measure temperature, but has another smart function. Curious how to use it? See here how to use your iPhone to determine distances.
