The Apple Vision Pro won’t be released for a few months, but Apple is already working on a cheap ‘Apple Vision’. It does lack some luxury features: these are them.
Apple Vision Pro
The Apple Vision Pro is by far the most luxurious VR glasses to date. Not only does it have razor-sharp displays and advanced eye tracking, but it also has a handy external screen to expose your eyes to the outside world and a lightning-fast M2 chip. It doesn’t get more advanced than this (for now)!
However, all that luxury also has a price. Because the Apple Vision Pro will soon be available in stores for no less than $3499 – with an expected euro price of around €4100! Of course, that’s not really feasible for most people. Fortunately, Apple is also working on a cheaper version of the glasses, the ‘normal’ Apple Vision. But it will miss a few luxury features, according to Apple analyst Mark Gurman.
Cheap Apple Vision: no EyeSight, no M2
Firstly, EyeSight is missing. That is the screen on the outside of the Apple Vision Pro, which makes your eyes visible to the people around you. This part seems pretty simple, but it uses a lens that shows multiple perspectives of your eyes. In other words: if someone stands straight in front of you, he sees something different than if he stands diagonally opposite you. This technology is not cheap, so to save costs this function is omitted from the normal Apple Vision.
The second feature that the Apple Vision is missing is the M2 chip. This Mac processor has considerable muscle, but is therefore also more expensive to produce than an iPhone chip like the A17 Pro. In addition, the M2 in the Apple Vision Pro requires a fan, which may be omitted with a less powerful chip. This also saves money!
Patience is a virtue
You will need patience if you want to get a cheaper Apple Vision: the glasses will probably not be released until 2025. Until then, we’ll just have to watch YouTube videos of other people playing with an Apple Vision Pro… sigh.
