Checkmarks in WhatsApp: this is how they work (and this is what the colors mean)

Do you regularly send messages on WhatsApp? Then it is important to know what the different colors of the check marks in WhatsApp mean!

Checkmarks in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has several useful functions to see whether your message has been received correctly. Of course, you know that your chat message has been delivered correctly when the recipient has responded, but that sometimes takes (too) long. In that case, it is much more convenient to check the check marks, or read receipts, in WhatsApp. These check marks tell you whether the message has already been delivered and whether the recipient has read the message.

WhatsApp currently has three types of check marks. You will see these read receipts when you have sent a text message, photo, video or voice message. Swiping the message to the left shows the message information in WhatsApp. What the check marks exactly mean depends on the conversation in which you send the message. For example, read receipts have a different meaning in a group conversation than in a private conversation. This is what the check marks in WhatsApp mean:

Private conversation:

  • One gray check mark: the message has been sent, but not yet delivered;
  • Two gray check marks: the message has arrived, but not yet read;
  • Two blue check marks: the message has been read.

Group conversation:

  • One gray check mark: the message has been sent, but not yet delivered to everyone in the group;
  • Two gray check marks: the message has reached everyone in the group, but has not yet been read by everyone;
  • Two blue check marks: everyone in the group conversation has read the message.

Disable blue check marks in WhatsApp

The blue check marks in WhatsApp are only visible if you have enabled the feature yourself. So you won’t see when someone has read your messages if you have turned off the blue check marks. Would you rather not let others see when you have opened a chat? Then you can easily disable the blue check marks in WhatsApp. You do this as follows:

  1. Open ‘WhatsApp’ on your iPhone;

  2. Go to Settings’;

  3. Tap ‘Privacy’;

  4. Scroll down and turn off the switch behind ‘Read receipts’.

Be careful, because read receipts remain visible in group conversations. So you disable the blue check marks for private conversations in WhatsApp. Are you reading a message in a group conversation? Then the sender can still see when you opened the conversation. Are you sending a message in a conversation with multiple people? Then you can also check who has read your message, even if you have disabled the blue check marks in WhatsApp.

More tips for WhatsApp

It is also possible that you see a clock behind the sent message. In that case, your text message, photo, video, or voice recording has not yet been sent. There is a good chance that you will have problems with the internet or no active internet connection at all. As soon as you connect to the internet, the messages are sent automatically. The check marks will then automatically appear behind the message in WhatsApp.

Are you editing a message in WhatsApp? Then the read receipts are reset, so you can see who received and read the edited message. The gray and blue check marks then mean the same as when you have sent a new message in WhatsApp. Did you find this tip useful and would you like to know more about WhatsApp?
