Chrysler LeBaron (1991) – Enthusiast Wanted

The Chrysler LeBaron of the fourth generation is a car that enjoyed modest success in the Netherlands. That is, for what it was. A car that was clearly not created with the European customer in mind. The LeBaron had a thoroughly American design with an interior that by European standards already looked outdated when the LeBaron appeared on the market. Still, quite a few Dutch people were charmed by it, including apparently former football coach Rinus Michels, also known as ‘The General’.

The man who helped the Netherlands to become European Champion in 1988 bought himself a blue Chrysler LeBaron coupé three years after this legendary event. According to an advertisement from more than four years ago, the LeBaron then remained in the possession of Michels, who died in 2005, until 1999. From that same advertisement we fished the proof that this LeBaron really belonged to Michels. Among other things, an insurance card (penultimate photo) shows that the ‘ZV-11-ZH’ was actually registered in the name of De Generaal.

Now you must either be very sensitive to the fact that the car belonged to Michels, or be a big LeBaron fan, because there are better ones to buy. According to the provider, the car has been standing still for quite some time and the mileage of only 74,076 km seems to support that. The selling party further states that the 97 hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine also consumes oil and, moreover, the MOT has already expired last September. However, cosmetically it still seems to be a pretty neat copy, so who knows, with some technical attention it can be turned into a top copy again. However, the asking price of €4,450 is not very tender, so you are probably paying a large part for the special history of the car. It must be worth it to you, otherwise you better look for another LeBaron.
