Did you know that Citizen also produces timepieces in addition to watches? In fact, the company is one of the largest in the world. An important reason for this is that Citizen developed the first solar watch in the 1970s. That technique – which is called Eco-Drive at Citizen – is the basis of all solar watches.
So, when you buy a solar-powered watch, chances are the technology in it comes from Citizen. In addition, all quartz watches in the Citizen range are Eco-Drive. Combined with Super Titaniumâ„¢, also developed by Citizen, this will result in a collection of advanced, durable and beautiful watches in 2020.
The origin of Citizen Eco-Drive
Citizen has always been at the forefront of developing sustainable technologies. When the energy crisis in the mid-1970s made it painfully clear that fossil energy is finite, Citizen decided to focus on developing a watch with a sustainable energy source.
Battery-operated quartz watches had a dominant market position at that time and were incredibly popular. But due to the limited life of the disposable battery, these watches had (and still have) a huge environmental impact. This was only extra motivation for Citizen to continue to improve the development of solar technology. This has resulted in a timepiece that will run for more than six months on a full charge, even in total darkness. Thanks to the energy-saving function, some Eco-Drive watches can operate without light for up to seven years!

Citizen continues to lead the way: Super Titaniumâ„¢ goes to the moon!
Most solar watches have a (semi-) transparent dial that allows light to fall on the solar cells below. This of course limits designers in their possibilities. That is why Citizen has now developed a new method in which the solar cells are incorporated in the edge of the dial. This gives a lot of flexibility and makes the Eco-Drive watches even more beautiful and – not unimportant – thinner and lighter.
Another way to ensure that a watch does not become too heavy and large is to use the material titanium. Citizen is also at the forefront of this. Also in the 1970s, they developed the Duratect hardening method, with which the soft metal could be made suitable for the production of watches. And in 2021 SuperTitanium will even go to the moon!

50 years of Super Titaniumâ„¢
This year Citizen Super Titaniumâ„¢ celebrates its 50th anniversary. And of course that should be celebrated. In the Citizen collection you will find a large selection of Eco-Drive titanium watches and titanium watches with automatic movements that do not need a battery at all.
New in the Citizen titanium collection for 2020
Promaster country Tsuno Eco-Drive chronograph racer AV0080-88E
This special chronograph is a so-called ‘bullhead’, with the push buttons positioned at the top of the case. This gives the watch the look of a bull’s head.
Unique to the E210 movement is that the no less than 294 separate parts are put together by hand. The watch features a Super Titaniumâ„¢ strap and case, anti-glare sapphire crystal and a black dial with yellow accents. The chronograph is equipped with an alarm, stopwatch and power reserve indicator. Like most watches in the Promaster line, the Tsuno Chrono is water resistant to 200 meters.

Promaster Marine automatic diver NY0100-50XE / NY0100-50ME
Since its introduction in 1989, Citizen Promaster diving watches have been loved by professionals. The Promaster Marine Automatic Diver is ISO 6425 certified, watertight to 20 bar and has a safety lock. In addition, the bottom is screwed down and the bezel is rotatable in one direction, making it the perfect diving partner. The shiny Super Titaniumâ„¢ strap in combination with a green or blue dial gives the watch a special look.
Citizen Super Titaniumâ„¢ Eco-Drive Chronograph AT2470-85H / AT2470-85L
This modern chronograph is equipped with a 24-hour display, stopwatch, 150-day power reserve, battery discharge indicator, date, screw-back lid and is water resistant to 10 bar. Citizen Super Titaniumâ„¢ ladies watch FE6150-8H
The new collection of Super Titaniumâ„¢ ladies watches is characterized by high quality and refinement. Versatile, graceful and strong. An annular solar cell around the dial efficiently converts light into energy, leaving plenty of room for the dial to shine.
Yet this lightweight watch with a modest size of 34 mm has a power reserve of no less than 240 days!
SuperTitaniumâ„¢ watch with GPS
Citizen celebrates the 50th anniversary of the release of the world’s first titanium watch with the Satellite Wave GPS.
The design is based on the ‘space’ design concept of the Satellite wave GPS F100 (from 2014) and F900 (from 2015). The case and strap of this Super Titanium watch have pronounced three-dimensional surfaces with sharp, straight lines that create a play of angles and shadows. The black dial consists of a multi-layered structure with six stacked parts, which evokes the image of the endless depth of space. The anti-reflective sapphire glass enhances this effect.
The cabinet combines two aspects of Citizen’s unique hardening technology; Duratect*2 DLC and Duratect Sakura Pink. It contains the F990 GPS Satellite Wave movement. This advanced timepiece receives GPS satellite signals at the fastest speed in the world within 3 seconds. Correction of the position of the hands is done via a super-fast twin-coil motor capable of moving the hands 360 degrees forward or backward in a single second.
