Citroën C4 SpaceTourer out of production: French MPV disappears

Citroen C4 SpaceTourer and Grand C4 SpaceTourer

Partly due to the increasing popularity of crossovers and SUVs, the MPV segment is on the brink of death, with the result that the MPV range is increasingly thinned out. Now another MPV has been buried: the Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer

Citroën already cut the C4 SpaceTourer from the delivery range in 2020 and now its bigger brother has also gone for the axe. We say goodbye to the Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer. With the disappearance of the Grand C4 Space Tourer, the bloodline that originated in the Xsara Picasso has come to an end. The farewell generation C4 SpaceTourer started its existence in 2013 as C4 Picasso and get its SpaceTourer name stuck on itself in 2018.

Citroën internally pushes the only recently available passenger version of the Berlingo and the C5 Aircross only as a ë-Berlingo as spiritual successors to the (Grand) C4 SpaceTourer, but MPVs are of course not. Those who had hoped for a direct successor to the C4 SpaceTourers, unfortunately we have to disappoint. Citroën is crystal clear: there will not be.

Citroen Xsara Picasso

Up to and including 2011, no fewer than 42,998 copies of the Xsara Picasso, introduced on the Dutch market, have been sold. That striking egg-shaped compact MPV was used for quite a long time next to the first generation C4 Picasso, launched in 2007 and initially intended as a direct successor. Citroën has sold a total of 36,974 C4 Picassos, but this also includes the copies of the C4 SpaceTourer sold until 2018 under that name. Since the second generation C4 Picasso was renamed the C4 SpaceTourer, Citroën has sold 2,044 units.

Traditional MPVs are a rarity these days. The Renault Scénic is no longer available and is – temporarily – still available as a Grand Scénic. The new Scénic will be an SUV. The Renault Espace no longer exists and Opel has not had a ‘traditional’ Zafira for some time. The brand now uses the model name Zafira for the passenger car version of the Vivaro.
