Research by the AD shows that collisions in the Netherlands are increasingly staged to defraud insurers. This form of insurance fraud is also becoming increasingly professional and organized, sometimes even involving incorrect claims for personal injury.
‘Lifting’ an insurer with damage to the bodywork often involves the use of rental cars and cars that are worth a lot of money on paper, but not in practice due to a damage and import history. The latter is not visible to the appraiser and damage repairer, which means that an insurer then pays out a claim amount that does not correspond to the actual damage, reports the AD. According to the newspaper, a major professionalization effort is underway in this area. The Vehicle Crime Insurance Agency Foundation (VbV) would even speak of organized crime, especially now that physiotherapists and healthcare companies sometimes become involved in claiming personal injury.
Moreover, the chance of being caught appears to be small, because insurers cannot fully investigate every claim. However, there are a number of ‘red flags’ that can show that there may be more going on than an innocent case of damage. Which ones are they? You read that in the original AD article.
