Jogging in the rain has several advantages. The most important prerequisite for this, however, is the right equipment. We will explain to you what you should consider for your running training in bad weather.

Jogging in the rain can take a lot of effort. It can have a positive effect on both your body and your psyche. However, good planning and water-repellent, waterproof and breathable sports clothing are important.

Jogging in the rain: That’s why it’s worth it

Jogging in the rain? That sounds very intimidating at first. Who voluntarily decides to do sports outside in wet and cold conditions? There are four good reasons for doing your training even in bad weather:

  1. Strengthened immune system: According to the German Medical Journal, moderate endurance sports can strengthen the immune system. (When jogging, for example, a training volume of 15 to 25 kilometers per week is considered moderate.) The physical strain has a stimulating effect on the immune cells and can therefore prevent respiratory infections and possibly even more serious diseases, such as some types of cancer, according to the UGB.

  2. Mental strength: Endurance training not only strengthens your body, but also your mind.   3. Higher performance: If you don’t mind jogging in the rain, you’re more likely to stick to your training plan even in bad weather. This means you miss fewer running sessions than people who only lace up their running shoes when the sun is shining. Through regular training you can continuously increase your performance.

  4. Empty running routes: Not everyone can bring themselves to go jogging in bad weather. This has the clear advantage for you that the streets and paths are significantly emptier than they are when the weather is nice. This way you can go running more relaxed and concentrate entirely on yourself.

The right equipment for jogging in the rain

On normal rainy days you can go running without any worries as long as you are properly equipped:

  • Weatherproof and breathable sports clothing: The right equipment is the be-all and end-all when jogging in the rain. This primarily includes a waterproof and water-repellent sports jacket. A cap or light hat will also keep your head warm and prevent your face from getting wet. In addition, non-slip running shoes with breathable and quick-drying running socks are recommended.

  • Onion principle: It’s best to dress according to the onion principle. It’s better to use several thin layers rather than one thick layer. It’s important that you don’t dress too warmly and sweat too much. For example, you can wear a functional undershirt, a running shirt and a long-sleeved shirt under the running jacket. You’re dressed just right if you feel a little cold at the start of your run.

If it rains: plan a jogging route

Jogging in the rain has several advantages. However, be sure to pay attention to the weather warnings. During storms and thunderstorms, you should avoid training outside. The following points also help:

  • Plan your route: You should plan your run in advance if possible. It’s best to make sure that your route starts and ends at your front door. So you can do your stretching exercises at home in the warmth and get rid of your wet clothes straight after training. In particularly rainy weather, it can also make sense to avoid very muddy paths and forest paths.

  • Warm shower after training: Immediately after jogging in the rain, you should take a warm shower and change clothes at home. This way you can make sure that your body doesn’t cool down too much.
