1. The new design
OPPO is giving ColorOS 12 a new look. There are 300 enhanced animations that make the interface smoother. The new look is sleek with more white space and rest on the screen. OPPO is consistent with colors and thus highlights elements in the interface. There are new menus, icons and personalization features.
In addition, a form of AR emoji could not be missing, which are 3D emoji that you can personalize yourself. OPPO calls it the ‘Omoji’. The Always on screen has been improved again with many new design options.
It is striking that OPPO also gets ideas from the Material You design of Android 12. The colors in your background are also given a place through the interface. It’s just not clear whether the brand uses Google’s APIs for this, or whether it has developed its own system to make it work. In the latter case, the colors of your background will probably not be visible in apps other than OPPO’s. We will update this article as soon as there is more clarity.
2. Privacy Features
What OPPO has looked at are the privacy functions of Android 12. The privacy dashboard will simply get a place in ColorOS 12. It is an overview of which apps have access to the camera and microphone, and at what time they use that permission.
In addition, indicators appear on the screen when the camera or microphone is used by an app. On OPPO phones, you will also be able to choose to allow certain apps to access your approximate location instead of your exact location.
These are all privacy functions that we know from Android 12, but OPPO also supplements them with its own features. You will be able to hide apps, media and files behind a PIN code. The Chinese brand also emphasizes that it has servers all over the world. User data is stored on the nearby servers, in a plain text format and sent using a proprietary protocol.
3. Long Term Performance
Google already emphasized it when it launched Android 12, namely that the software makes phones faster and more efficient. That is also what OPPO says. Older phones suffer from fewer delays. Phones that are three years old will have a memory occupancy that is 30 percent lower compared to the previous version. Furthermore, battery consumption for older phones has also decreased by 20 percent.
4. PC Connect and other features
OPPO introduces us to a series of novelties and improvements in ColorOS 12. PC Connect is OPPO’s connector between phones and Windows. You will be able to exchange files with a transfer speed of up to 45 MB/s. You can also cast your phone screen.
In addition, there are other productivity features. You can translate on your phone via Google Lens by tapping the screen with three fingers. OPPO also has improvements for FlexDrop and the Phone Manager. Those are both features that we already know from previous versions of ColorOS.
