The AirPods Pro 2 are going to get quite a few cool functions thanks to a new version of bluetooth and Auracast. iPhoned tells you everything you need to know about this!
New features AirPods Pro 2: bluetooth upgrade and Auracast
Apple is rumored to release the AirPods Pro 2 this fall. The first generation of the AirPods Pro came out in 2019, so it’s actually time for an update. Not only will the new earbuds get new features, but various sources also say that a new H1 chip is coming. This chip should ensure a longer battery life and improved active noise cancellation for the AirPods Pro 2.
According to the latest rumors, this new H1 chip will also support the new version of bluetooth. This new version of bluetooth has just been completed and features the LC3 codec. This codec has better sound quality with a much lower bitrate. The codec therefore ensures, among other things, that the power consumption is considerably lower. Several rumors also indicate that iOS 16 has support for this LC3 codec.
What is Auracast?
That’s not all, though, as more is likely to change. If the AirPods Pro 2 does indeed support the new bluetooth codec, Auracast (which is part of this) will also come into play. With Auracast, for example, you can connect multiple sets of earbuds to a source to listen to music. At the moment this is already possible with your AirPods, but you can use a maximum of two sets of AirPods. Soon there will be a lot more!
This makes it easier to connect. You can then, for example, connect your AirPods to the television in the gym (or less fun: the conference room). This way you can make your meters undisturbed on the treadmill, while you can also follow the television broadcast.
To connect to an Auracast device, you don’t have to do any crazy jumps. It’s much like connecting to a Wi-Fi network now. Another option is that you connect via a special QR code or that you have to keep the iPhone (with AirPods connected) nearby for a while.
And what about the old AirPods?
It is not yet known whether the old AirPods may also receive (partially) the new Bluetooth functions with a software update. New hardware is probably needed to really be able to use all functions. This means that the AirPods Pro 2 could be the first earbuds that will receive the new functions of bluetooth (and therefore Auracast).
