At the weekend there was another demonstration against the corona measures – this time in Stuttgart. The cabaret artist Florian Schroeder was invited as a speaker. However, it delivered a slightly different appearance than the organizers and guests had expected. The video of the speech went viral.
About 1,500 participants gathered on Saturday in Stuttgart to demonstrate against the current corona policy. The group “lateral thinking 711” has been organizing protests there since April.
For the event on Saturday, the organizers had invited Florian Schroeder, a cabaret artist and presenter who is best known from ARD. Apparently they had seen a satirical NDR appearance by Schroeder and assumed that he would also reject the corona measures.
Schroeder: “Are our media controlled?”
At the beginning of his speech, Schroeder still gives the impression that he is like-minded. He comes from the “mainstream” and has used his appearance at NDR to tell “the truth”. In Stuttgart – the city of freedom – he now wants to talk about dialectics.
After a few initial jokes, he begins to take apart the main arguments of the protesters. “I would like to know from you: Are our media controlled?” The response of the participants can be clearly heard in the video. “Yes!”.
Schroeder then lists a few facts: Before the shutdown, the Ministry of Health withdrew fake news several times, according to which restrictions on public life were imminent. A short time later, the restrictions occurred. The Robert Koch Institute changed its rating of masks several times. Ischgl was not identified as a hotspot by the Robert Koch Institute, but by the Hamburg Senate.
While Schroeder speaks, the audience cheers. Then he asks another question: “Where did I get this information that I have just presented here? I got it from the mirror and from time. From the mainstream. So are our media all controlled? If so, then it might not even be in the mirror and in the time. Are our media really controlled? “

Endure dissenting opinions
Schroeder continues in a similar style: “Are we living in a dictatorship? Are we living in a Corona dictatorship? ”This time the“ Yes! ”Of the demonstrators is even louder. “I don’t think we’re living in a dictatorship,” says Schroeder. “Because if we had some form of dictatorship, you shouldn’t even meet here today, then you shouldn’t stand here and I shouldn’t even speak.”
In the next question, Schroeder addresses the charge that one is no longer allowed to express one’s opinion freely these days. “Do you want total freedom of expression?” Again, the answer is “yes”. The cabaret artist then explains that he is convinced that Corona is a highly contagious disease. Wearing a mask and keeping your distance are the most important measures to counteract this. As expected, Schroeder is booed at these words. “This is my opinion. If you are for freedom of expression, you have to endure my opinion. “
Irresponsibility is not freedom
Schroeder’s message to the protesters: To do without masks in tight spaces is not freedom, but irresponsibility. “Freedom means accepting sensible restrictions. […] A freedom that only shows itself as irresponsibility is the end of freedom. “
In the course of the speech one hears angry protests again and again. “Are you in favor of the dictatorship?” A man calls out. On YouTube, however, Schroeder’s appearance is well received. The video was viewed more than 350,000 times (as of August 10th) – the comments are mostly positive. “I wanted to test whether the advocates of freedom of expression can also deal with freedom of expression,” commented Schroeder on his appearance on Monday on SWR radio. “It is the duty of a satirist at this time to use exactly such an action to pursue a bit of clarification.”
