The Corona podcast from Drosten informs you every day about new developments in science.

Christian Drosten is Director of the Institute of Virology at the Berlin Charité. The virologist has been researching so-called SARS viruses, an abbreviation for “Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome”. This group also includes the currently new corona virus, which is why it is also referred to as SARS-CoV-2.

When the first SARS pandemic occurred in 2002, Drosten (then still working at the Berhard Nocht Institute in Hamburg) was able to identify the pathogen. This pathogen also belongs to the group of corona viruses. Together with a colleague, Drosten quickly developed a verification test. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for this work.

Today the virologist is considered one of the best-known doctors in Germany. He is asked about the corona virus in talk shows and interviews, because he is now researching as part of one nationwide research network around the clock on the properties of the new virus.

Drosten emphasizes again and again how important transparency is to better understand and control the virus. In the NDR Corona podcast, he talks to two science editors about the latest information in science every day in 30 to 40 minutes. The primary goal is to pass on well-founded information in order to educate the population as well as possible – without spreading unnecessary panic. Topics that have been discussed in previous podcast episodes include:

  • Investigations into medicines and vaccines
  • Antibody tests
  • the effectiveness of curfews
