If the Corona-Warn-App is red, this does not necessarily mean infection with the contagious virus. We will tell you how best to behave in this situation.
Suddenly the cell phone beeps, a push message appears and the shock is great: The Corona warning app is red! So you met someone who tested positive for the virus afterwards. The Corona-Warn-App only turns red if you were about nine minutes and less than two meters away from this person. Distance and duration are measured via Bluetooth. The mobile phones send each other encrypted data.
Even if you have had several corona contacts in a row that would only be classified as low risk, the Corona warning app will turn red. The app also shows the days on which the last risk encounter took place.
Corona warning app is red: reduce contacts
Even if your Corona warning app is red, that does not mean that you must have been infected. Because if you at the encounter a FFP2 mask wore or the encounter took place outside, the app does not know and cannot take this into account in the calculation. Your vaccination status is also not taken into account. Nevertheless, caution is required without panicking. You should note the following in such a situation:
- Reduce your contacts and go home immediately. Whether vaccinated or boosted – the Corona-Warn-App recommends a voluntary and independent self-quarantine until a negative test result is available. Even if you don’t actually have to be in quarantine as a fully vaccinated or newly recovered person.
- Inform your contacts of the last few days so that they can also isolate themselves and be tested if necessary.
- Follow the usual hygiene rules.
Corona warning app on red: Have it tested!
In Corona times, regular (quick) tests are always useful. If the Corona-Warn-App is red, testing is all the more important. You should note the following:

- People who have been vaccinated can also be tested with an antigen test. Especially in times when PCR tests are scarce, this can be sufficient if you have no symptoms. If the antigen test is positive, you should do a PCR test to confirm.
- Since the test does not always work immediately after an infection, you should, to be on the safe side a test several days in a row do. You can also use self-tests for this.
- If you are being tested in a test center, it is best to switch off the Bluetooth on your cell phone for a moment. Otherwise you will probably have another red warning in the app within the next few days. By wearing an FFP2 mask and keeping your distance from the other people waiting, the risk of infection can be considered to be low.
- Watch for symptoms. On average, these occur four to six days after infection. You can use the date of the risk encounter as a guide. Symptoms can also occur in vaccinated, recovered and boosted individuals.
- If you feel unsure about how to behave or if you notice symptoms, you can contact your family doctor’s practice or call the on-call service of statutory health insurance physicians on 116 117. This number will also be displayed in the Corona-Warn-App.
- If your test result is positive and you have contracted Corona, you should Also enter the infection in the Corona-Warn-App. This is the only way you can warn other people who have been in your vicinity. You can find out about the currently applicable quarantine rules on the website of the federal government.
