Create groups with people and pets in photos for iPhone, iPad and Mac

In photos it has been possible for some time to automatically sort photos of people, dogs and cats using on-device face recognition. Since iOS 18, iPados 18 and macOS Sequoia, this has been expanded with groups.

You can easily merge several people and/or pets, so that all the photos on which this group is visible is visible. In addition, this information is useful for the suggestions that photos can do, such as sharing photos after a day out with members from the group.

Create groups with people in photos

  • Open the photos app on your iPhone or iPad
  • Tap ‘Persons and Pets’
  • Go to ‘Groups’
  • Tap ‘Create’
  • Select the desired persons
  • Tap ‘Add’

Do you not see the ‘people and pets’ option? Then tap ‘Apply and change order’ at the bottom of the photos app and add the option to the overview.

On a Mac you open the photos application and click on ‘Persons and Pets’ in the navigation bar. Just like on an iPhone or iPad, go to ‘groups’ and click on ‘Create’ to put together a new group.

Multiple groups

Groups can consist of several people and pets. A person can also be added in several groups. Photos will only add the photos and videos as all members of a group can be seen on the media.

Adjust groups

Just like with individual persons, it is also possible to change the display of groups. Go to the overview and put your finger on the group until it starts to float. Then drag the group to a desired position. On a Mac you can immediately drag the group to a place.

Customize main photo (cover)

Just like with people and all other albums in photos, you can adjust the main photo. To do this, open the group and navigate to the photo that you want to use as a cover. Place your finger (in the overview with all photos) on the photo and wait a few moments. Then choose ‘Set as main photo’. On a Mac it is sufficient by clicking on the photo in the overview with a secondary click (right mouse button) and choosing as ‘Set as main photo’.
