Cupra DarkRebel: electric shooting brake more than digital signal

On the eve of the IAA in Munich, Cupra pulled the curtain on the DarkRebel. The Cupra DarkRebel is an electric shooting brake loaded with aggressive lines that is less elusive than before, but – unfortunately – still not very concrete.

Cupra made us and probably others dizzy earlier this year with the DarkRebel. The Cupra DarkRebel was pure in the digital as well as elusive metaverse concept car shown that actually consisted only of ones and zeros. The Cupra DarkRebel is now pulled out of the virtual world by the Spaniards and awakens in tangible form during the IAA in Munich. A copy has now actually been made.

Anyone who gets shivers from the increasing extent to which virtual concepts are creeping into everyday life would probably do better to close this article. This tangible copy of the Cupra DarkRebel also has strong connections with Cupras Metahype in which it was created. Cupra – which Cupra driving enthusiasts refer to as his tribe – has asked his fellow tribesmen to join his so-called Hyper Configurator in the Metahype to shape the digital DarkRebel. According to Cupra, more than 270,000 Cupra followers have configured a DarkRebel in that digital design room. The Spaniards say they have now translated all those composite copies into one design. That more or less all-encompassing DarkRebel has actually been built and now also exists in ‘our world’.

Just like the virtual DarkRebel, this tangible Cupra DarkRebel is also an electric one shooting brake which is lavishly decorated with quite aggressive design. Although its appearance may suggest otherwise, the DarkRebel is a two-seater. Cupra even calls the car an ‘electric sports car’. As before, Cupra is not talking about the arrival of a production version, so you do not have to think of a new goal for your savings balance. According to Cupra, the DarkRebel should show that electric cars “[…] sexy, emotional and provocative”. Whether he is? That is of course a matter of taste. In any case, the DarkRebel proves that Cupra is doing its best to come up with creative ways to involve (potential) Cupra customers with the brand .

The DarkRebel itself is 4.5 meters long, 2.2 meters wide and 1.4 meters high. Cupra has used many sustainable materials in the interior, which are made of 90 percent bamboo. The DarkRebel has a thermal camera on the roof, the data of which should contribute to climate control in the interior. Is there nothing concrete at all in this study model? Of course it is. For example, the headlights composed of triangles hint at the new light signature that all Cupras will soon receive.
