Tesla Model Y lags behind

Dacia Sandero is still the most popular car in Europe

The Tesla Model Y was the most popular new passenger car in Europe last year. In the first three months of this year, it is not the Model Y, but the down-to-earth Dacia Sandero that is in the lead. This is evident from preliminary figures from Dataforce that Automotive News publishes.

The Dacia Sandero was again the most popular car among private individuals in Europe last year. However, it was not the most registered new passenger car, after all, it was the Tesla Model Y. Preliminary figures from Dataforce show that the Sandero is in the lead in the first three months of this year.

The figures – which include almost all car registrations in the EU and those of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom – show that 70,567 Dacia Sanderos have already been registered in the first three months of this year. That was no less than 20 percent more than in the same period last year. The Volkswagen Golf is in second place with almost 63,500 registered units. Volkswagen is undoubtedly pleased with this, as there were almost 50 percent more than in the first quarter of 2023. The Tesla Model Y is in third place with just under 58,000 registrations. In the first quarter of this year, almost 18 percent fewer new Model Ys were registered than in the same period last year. Places four and five go to the Peugeot 208 (58,847 units, +9.1 percent) and the Citroën C3 (53,005 units, +36.7 percent).

In the Netherlands, the Tesla Model Y was the most popular new car in the first quarter of this year. During that period, 4,133 units were registered, 18.2 percent more than in the first quarter of 2023. The Model Y was ahead of the Volvo XC40 (second place) and the Toyota Aygo X (third place).
