Light makes electrons vibrate. If this effect is cleverly used, it could improve the efficiency of catalytic converters and solar cells - and thereby make the world more climate-friendly.
Normally, Holger Lange shoots his samples with a laser. But when he simply held them up to the window in a beaker, the effect that interested him could also be seen like this: the otherwise inconspicuous liquid, in which a tiny amount of small gold particles were floating, turned a rich red in the incident sunlight.
