This brings iOS 19 to your iPhone

Apple releases the first beta of iOS 19 immediately after the WWDC 2025 Keynote, which is planned for Monday 9 June. After the beta tests, the update must appear before the general public in September. We give you an overview of the most important iOS 19 rumors so far.

These are all the new functions that come to your iPhone with iOS 19

A new design

iOS 19 is expected to introduce a new design that is more like the Visionos control system of the Apple Vision Pro headset. According to Jon Prosser from Front Page Tech, iOS 19 gets a glassy appearance, with transparent menus, buttons and other elements. He also expects rounder app icons and a new floating beam with tabs in Apple apps.

Mark Gurman van Bloomberg also expects iOS 19 to get a Visionos-like design. He thinks the changes in the design will be the biggest since iOS 7.

End-to-end encryption for RCS messages

Last month, Apple said that it is planning to add support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messages to the Message app in future software updates. That probably means in iOS 19, MacOS 16 and other accompanying updates.

Here are five new possibilities that you can expect for RCS-Chats on iOS 19:

  • End-to-end encryption: This means Apple and other third parties cannot read messages and appendices.
  • In-line answers.
  • Edit messages.
  • Delete messages.
  • Full tapback support (direct response to a specific message).

Live translations with AirPods

According to Mark Gurman van Bloomberg, at least some AirPods models will have a new live translation function with iOS 19 and a corresponding firmware update. Live translations work as follows: For example, if an English -speaking person hears talking to Spanish, the iPhone translates the speech and passes them on in English via the user’s airpods. The words of the English speaker are now translated into Spanish and played through the iPhone.

More personal Siri

Apple recently postponed the more personal version of Siri who had shown it as a taste of it during WWDC last year. The company said it expects to roll out the Siri upgrades at a certain point in the coming year. The functions could therefore be launched on your iPhone later this year as part of iOS 19.

We expect the functions of personal context, screen consciousness and app integration anyway. During the WWDC 2024 Keynote, for example, Apple showed an iPhone user who asked Siri about his mother’s flight and lunch reservations based on information from the mail and messages apps.

The renewed Siri functions require an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, so you have an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, an iPhone 16 model or an iPhone 17 model needed that will be launched later this year.

Improved health app

We expect a renewed health app in iOS 19.4. According to Gurman, Apple is planning to offer a new AI-controlled coaching function that gives more personal health advice. The information that the coaching function offers would be accompanied by videos from health experts who inform users about various health conditions and ways to improve their lifestyle. For example, if the Apple Watch keeps bad heart rate trends, a video could explain the risks of heart disease.

Keeping up what you eat will be another large part of the renewed health app on your iPhone with iOS 19. According to Gurman, the app could compete with the MyfitnessPal app.

EU changes

Last month, the European Commission announced a long list of changes that Apple is legally obliged to implement in future iOS 19 and iOS 20 updates. The announcement clarifies the requirements that Apple must adhere to in the EU under the Digital Markets Act, which has been fully in force since March 2024. The changes will further open the iPhone and its technologies to competing companies and devices, and Apple is not happy with that. These are some of the most important requirements:

  • Smartwatches from third parties must be able to display iOS reports at the end of 2025 and communicate with them. This will probably be iOS 19.2 or earlier.
  • Apple must make the automatic audio unit function available for 1 June 2026 for headphones of third parties. We expect this in iOS 19.4 or earlier. This is the function with which most AirPods and certain beats can automatically change connection between Apple devices.
  • Apple has to make changes to iOS before 1 June 2026, so that third parties can offer equivalent Airdrop alternatives.
  • For iOS 20, or the end of 2026, Apple has to make changes to iOS so that third parties can offer equivalent AirPlay alternatives. iOS 20 is expected to be released to the general public in September 2026.

The full list of changes can be found on the website of the European Commission.
