1. Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max
Techzle review score: 90/100
+ Excellent cameras
+ Design and build quality
– Still no usb-c
– Basic model only has 64GB of storage memory
Those looking for the best iPhone will end up with the 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max. Apple’s newest smartphones are more expensive than the 11 and older XR and XS but justify the price difference with considerably better hardware. The processor is even faster, the FaceID face protection even more user-friendly and the battery life is longer. With its 5.8-inch full-HD OLED display, the iPhone 11 Pro is just as large as its predecessor and still relatively compact. The Max version of 6.5-inch follows the iPhone XS Max and cannot be used with one hand. With 226 grams, it is also one of the toughest smartphones of the moment. The 11 Pro series is very successful with the new triple camera. The wide-angle lens is useful, the zoom camera is still limited. During the day and at night, the primary camera takes very good photos and videos. The camera can go with the absolute top. In other areas, the newest iPhones are less impressive. They are still equipped with Apple’s Lightning port, while practically all smartphones (and other Apple gadgets) are transferred to usb-c. And with an eye on the sky-high prices, it is outrageous that the entry-level versions of the iPhones still have only 64GB of storage memory.
2. Samsung Galaxy Note 10+
Techzle review score: 90/100
+ Breathtaking screen
+ Most powerful hardware
– Placement buttons for right-handed people
– Is not comfortable in the hand
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is a larger and better version of the regular Note 10. Those looking for a smartphone with the largest possible screen cannot ignore the Note 10+. The 6.8-inch display is huge and therefore a removable stylus pen is hidden in the housing. With this S-Pen you can draw, write and perform (gestures) actions on the screen to operate apps and take photos. The display is of excellent quality and that also applies to the hardware. A bizarre fast processor, preferably 12 GB of memory and a generous 256 GB of storage space make the Note 10+ very future-proof. The battery lasts effortlessly for a day and charges quickly – wired or wireless. Also good are the good stereo speakers, Samsung’s user-friendly One UI software and the good update policy. The quadruple camera on the back is practically identical to that of the Galaxy S10 series and works especially well during the day. At night and with zoom, the Note 10+ must know its multiple to various competitors.
3. Samsung Galaxy S10
Techzle review score: 80
+ Excellent display
+ Versatile cameras
– Battery charges relatively slowly
– Disappointing fingerprint scanner
The Galaxy S10 is one of the most popular smartphones of the moment and that is understandable. The device looks nice, is sturdy and water and dust proof and more compact than the 6.1 inch screen suggests. That display looks very nice because of the OLED panel and razor-sharp QHD resolution. Almost the entire front of the S10 consists of a screen, with a small hole in the rectangle for the selfie camera. At the bottom of the screen is a fingerprint scanner. That sounds great, but in practice the speed and accuracy of the scanner is disappointing. The smartphone plays all apps and games smoothly thanks to its fast processor, large amount of working memory (8 GB) and the large storage memory of 128 GB. On the back of the phone is a triple camera, consisting of a primary lens, a wide-angle camera and a telephoto lens for a few zooms. The cameras shoot very beautiful images with sparkling colors, especially during the day. In the dark, the S10 has to tolerate the latest iPhones, Pixel 4 and Huawei P30, although the photo quality is still excellent. Samsung’s One UI software shell over Android is user-friendly and receives quick and long-term updates. The battery lasts for a day, but then it happened. There are devices that last longer. The S10 charges wired or wireless and does it slightly slower than the competition.
4. Huawei P30 Pro
Techzle review score: 80
+ Best and most versatile camera
+ Very fast charging
– Fingerprint scanner is not the best
– Huawei software is getting used to
Huawei’s P30 Pro is the smartphone for photography and video enthusiasts in particular. The quadruple camera on the back is – almost a year after its release – still unparalleled. This is mainly due to the zoom camera and night mode. Thanks to a combination of a periscope camera and smart software, the P30 Pro zooms in five times optically, after which you can zoom up to ten times hybrid and fifty times digitally. In other words: the camera can zoom much further than the competition and the quality loss is limited. Very handy! The photography performance in the dark is also impressive, especially if you switch on the night mode. The iPhone 11 series and Google Pixel 4 try to push the P30 Pro off the night throne, but have great difficulty with that. During the day, the phone naturally also takes great photos with its main or wide-angle lens. The fourth camera, a depth sensor, helps with portrait photos. Apart from its cameras, the P30 Pro is a luxury smartphone with a fast processor, nice 6.47-inch OLED screen and long battery life. Charging is very fast, both wired (40W) and wireless (15W). The fingerprint scanner of the P30 Pro is behind the screen and is not the best, but works great. Huawei’s EMUI software requires some getting used to and is not our favorite Android shell.
5. Apple iPhone XS
Techzle review score: 80/100
+ Powerful hardware
+ Very nice screen
– Fragile
– Battery life
The iPhone XS (Max) has since been succeeded by the iPhone 11 Pro (Max), which you will also find in this overview. If the latest iPhone is outside your budget, the XS (Max) can be an interesting choice. Tens of euros cheaper than the new iPhone 11, but with a much nicer full-HD OLED screen. The device has a fast processor, is water and dust proof and supports face protection via Face ID. The double (zoom) camera on the back takes beautiful photos and the sturdy, luxurious design of the phone should not be forgotten. However, there are also points for attention. For example, the battery life of the XS is shorter than that of the 11 and 11 Pro, and the XR also lasts longer. Not everyone will notice the difference, but if you value a long battery life, the XS is not the best choice. Moreover, with the XS (Max) you get a slow plug. Fast charging is only possible if you purchase a suitable plug yourself. Just like other iPhones, the device lacks a 3.5 mm headphone connection. Strangely enough, an adapter is not in the box and you must therefore purchase it yourself. Please note that the entry-level version of the iPhone XS (Max) has 64GB of storage space, which is not very much.
6. Apple iPhone 11
Techzle review score: 70/100
+ Long battery life
+ Powerful hardware
– Still an HD screen
– Battery still charges slowly
Do you want the latest iPhone but do you think the iPhone 11 Pro (Max) is too expensive? Apple offers an alternative in the form of the iPhone 11. This is the successor to the iPhone XR, to which it is very similar. The device is still water and dust proof, made of glass and can charge wirelessly. Wired charging is still possible with only 5W via the supplied plug. Buying an 18W plug yourself pays off because the battery then charges faster. Unfortunately still via Lightning instead of USB-C, the connection of all Android phones. Just like the XR, the iPhone 11 has a 6.1-inch LCD screen with HD resolution. The image therefore does not look very sharp, especially when you compare it to a more expensive iPhone. The lower screen resolution does contribute to an excellent battery life. The iPhone 11 also impresses with its cameras. The main camera performs very well during the day and at night and the difference with the 11 Pro models is small. The wide-angle lens is handy, making it easier to capture large buildings and groups of people. The third lens of the 11 Pro series, the zoom camera, has been saved. A nice thing about the iPhone 11 is the super-fast hardware, fine iOS software and Apple’s clear update policy. The phone is supported for years.
7. Oppo Reno 10x Zoom
Techzle review score: 70
+ Design with front-filling screen
+ Lots of storage memory
– Messy ColorOS software
– No wireless charging
Oppo’s Reno 10x Zoom smartphone is an improved version of the Reno 1 and 2, which do not have a significant zoom camera. The Reno 10x zoom can be zoomed in ten times thanks to a periscope lens and smart software. Hybrid then, because digital zooming is possible up to sixty times. Zooming in is very handy and with enough daylight the quality of the photos is excellent. In the dark, zooming is clearly less effective. Huawei’s similarly priced P30 Pro can zoom fifty times digitally. The Reno 10x Zoom also has a good normal camera and a wide-angle lens. A fast Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB of memory and no less than 256GB of storage space make the smartphone very complete. Unfortunately, wireless charging and a waterproof design must be missed. The 6.6-inch OLED screen is on the large side and looks sharp due to the full HD resolution. Due to the large screen, the smartphone is also heavy (210 grams). The battery lasts a long day but is then practically empty. Fortunately, charging is fast. The ColorOS 6 software from Oppo is not our favorite Android shell. The software looks busy, messy and contains many unnecessary apps – luckily you can partially remove them. Oppo’s update policy also fails to compete. The manufacturer promises a Color OS 7 update (Android 10) in the second quarter, but cannot guarantee anything after that.
8. Apple iPhone XR
Techzle review score: 70
+ Affordable iPhone
+ Good hardware
– Single camera is not the best
– Screen resolution
The iPhone XR was the world’s best-selling smartphone in 2019 and is still a good buy in 2020. This is partly because the phone has fallen in price, because it has been succeeded by the iPhone 11 (also in this list). The XR is similar in design to the more expensive models, has fine Face ID face protection and runs on a fast processor. The screen is quite large at 6.1 inches but does not look so sharp due to the HD resolution. The entry-level model has 64GB of storage memory and there are also variants with 128GB and 256GB memory for sale. A useful feature of the iPhone XR is that it can charge wirelessly and works very well with AirPods earbuds. The impressive battery life is another argument for choosing him above various competitors, including the iPhone XS (Max). There is one camera on the back of the XR and although it takes good photos, the camera is not the best at the moment. For example, many competing devices have two or more camera lenses that make the camera more versatile. Almost all telephones also charge wired (much) faster than the iPhone XR. The box contains a scanty 5W plug. If you buy an 18W plug, the battery will charge faster. Due to its lower price tag, good performance and years of iOS updates, the iPhone XR is the best choice for those looking for an affordable iPhone.
9. OnePlus 7T Pro
Techzle review score: 60/100
+ Design and front-filling display
+ The best hardware
– Bugs in software
– Not the best battery life
In 2019, OnePlus introduced the 7 Pro, which was succeeded by the 7T Pro after just a few months. Although the 7 Pro is a good buy, we recommend the 7T Pro. Don’t confuse it with the OnePlus 7T, a cheaper model with slightly less powerful hardware. The 7T Pro is the ideal smartphone for gamers and Android purists. The device has a breathtaking and crystal clear 6.7-inch OLED screen that looks smoother than other displays due to the high refresh rate of 90Hz. Thanks to the bizarre fast Snapdragon 855+ processor, 8GB memory and 256GB storage space, the smartphone runs all apps and the heaviest games without problems. OnePlus uses a barely modified Android version and rolls out updates every month for three years. Fine, because at the time of writing there are still some flaws in the (stability of the) software. The triple camera on the back takes very nice photos, although the usefulness of the zoom camera is limited. More useful is the 30W plug, which charges the battery in no time. That is not a superfluous luxury, because the battery life is actually the only concern of the OnePlus 7T. Heavy users have to top up with dinner and wireless charging is not possible. They are just like the lack of a water resistance certification blemishes on an otherwise very nice smartphone.
10 Google Pixel 4
Techzle review score: 50/100
+ Camera
+ Relatively compact, 90 Hz screen
– Poor battery life
– No fingerprint scanner
The Google Pixel 4 is not officially for sale in the Netherlands, but is available at a higher import price at (web) stores. Google also sells a Pixel 4 XL with an even higher price and a larger display and battery. The smartphones are a good buy for two reasons. First of all, they are from Google, the developer of Android. The standard Android version is therefore installed on a Pixel, without modifications or apps from a manufacturer. Moreover, you will be the first to receive updates and receive them for three years. In addition to the great software experience, the Pixel 4 is also known as one of the best smartphone cameras. Thanks to a good lens and Google’s unique software, the phone shoots excellent images both during the day and in the dark. An extra telephoto lens delivers zoom a few times, a handy feature that we see on more high-end smartphones. The Pixel 4 is also a relatively compact phone, thanks to the 5.7-inch OLED screen with full HD resolution. The high refresh rate of 90 Hz provides a smoother display but is also disastrous for the – already small – battery. The battery run-time is simply below par. Google’s own face protection through front cameras generally works well, but we miss a fingerprint scanner as an alternative. A wide-angle lens in the camera had also been valuable.
