Top 10 smartphones up to 200 euros

1. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8

9 Score 90 Score: 90

+ Nice design and screen

+ Four excellent cameras

– Slower plug in the box

– Smooth housing

The Redmi Note 8 from Xiaomi is very similar to the Redmi Note 8T, which you will find later in this overview. The T version is slightly better, but the differences are small. The Note 8 impresses with its luxurious housing and beautiful 6.3-inch full-HD LCD screen. The glass back is very smooth. With 190 grams, the weight is slightly heavier than average, although this will partly be due to the hefty 4000 mAh battery. He keeps the phone talking for two to three days; a nice score. Charging is via USB-C with a maximum of 18W, but the box contains a 10W plug. In other words: the standard plug does not get everything out of the phone. If you want to charge faster, purchase a Quick Charge 3 plug. The Redmi Note 8 has no less than four rear cameras: a main camera, a wide-angle lens, a macro camera and a depth sensor. The versatile camera set is easy to use and takes beautiful photos. In the dark there are competitors who take better pictures. It is nice that the smartphone has a triple card slot for two SIM cards and a micro SD card. The performance of the processor is excellent and with some Xiaomi’s MIUI software you can work well after some testing. The manufacturer is known for its long software support.

2. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7

8 Score 80 Score: 80

+ Excellent battery life

+ Smooth performance

– Xiaomi software is getting used to

– Buy a fast charger yourself

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 is one of the best budget smartphones of the moment. In the meantime succeeded by the Note 8 and therefore dropped in price, but still a device that you can use for years. The Note 7 has a sturdy, luxurious glass case and a good 6.3-inch full-HD screen. There is a double camera on the back, including a 48-megapixel main lens. It combines the image information of all those pixels into a 12-megapixel photo, which improves the quality. Especially in the dark, the Note 7 shoots better photos than the competition. The phone also impresses with its powerful processor, ample storage memory and battery life of one and a half to two and a half days. The box has a 10W plug but the battery charges faster with a separately available 18W plug. Fine is that charging is via USB-C and the Note 7 has an infrared sensor to control your television, for example. Unfortunately, an nfc chip is missing, which means the smartphone cannot pay contactless in stores. Xiaomi’s software dispute about Android takes some getting used to but then works fine. The smartphone will also receive updates for many years.

3. Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T

8 Score 80 Score: 80

+ Good battery life, fast charging

+ Four excellent cameras

– Heavy

– Xiaomi’s software is getting used to

In this list you will find the Note 8T as well as the Redmi Note 8. Not entirely surprising, the devices are very similar. The 8T runs on the same powerful processor and has the same 6.3-inch full-HD screen that covers almost the entire front. The working and storage memory is smaller than in the Note 8, but still large enough if you install a number of apps, games and photos. You can expand the memory with a micro SD card. Xiaomi also sells the Note 8T in a version with more work and storage memory, for which you naturally pay a little more. The smartphone has the same four cameras on the back as the Note 8. In addition to a 48-megapixel main camera, it is a wide-angle lens, a depth sensor and a macro camera. The versatile camera combination is special for such a cheap smartphone. The cameras take great photos and videos. Also nice is the built-in nfc chip for contactless payment and the usb-c connection. The large 4000 mAh battery lasts two to three days and charges nice and fast. The device is made of glass, splash-proof and weighs a little more than the competition at two hundred grams. Xiaomi’s MIUI software differs from other Android shells but works fine after some habituation. You are assured of years of software support.

4. Huawei P Smart 2019

8 Score 80 Score: 80

+ Beautiful design

+ Nice cameras

– Old micro USB connection

– Not the fastest processor

The Huawei P Smart 2019 (note the naming) is an inexpensive smartphone with a striking luxury housing made of glass. The device has a 6.2-inch LCD display that looks nice and looks sharp due to the full HD resolution. The large storage memory of 64GB (with micro-SD slot) is also nice: you can store many photos, apps and games on this phone. The smartphone also scores points with its good battery life, fast fingerprint scanner and dual camera on the back. He takes very good photos especially during the day. Huawei rightly shows off smart software in the camera app that recognizes situations and objects and chooses the right settings for that. We are less enthusiastic about the processor used: it is now somewhat older and not as powerful as the competition. With popular apps you don’t notice much of it now, but it can be different in a year and a half. The P Smart 2019 can also handle heavy games less well. The presence of a micro-usb port is more harmful, which means that the battery charges slowly and you do not benefit from other advantages of the newer usb-c connection. Most competing phones do have USB-C. Finally, Huawei’s EMUI software shell is getting used to Android because EMUI is busier and messier than the Android shells of other brands. Huawei’s update policy is fine.

5. Motorola Moto G7 Power

8 Score 80 Score: 80

+ Very long battery life

+ Good performance

– Update policy

– Lower screen resolution

The Motorola Moto G7 Power is the best choice for those looking for a cheap phone with an excellent battery life. The built-in 5000 mAh battery is the largest at the moment and will last three days under normal use. If you take it slower, the smartphone will last for four to five days. Fine is that the battery charges via USB-C. Apart from the great battery life, the Moto G7 Power is also a good phone. It is nice and fast, has a lot of storage memory and can play lighter games well. Handy is the extensive card slot, which offers space for two SIM cards and a micro SD card. With many devices you have to choose between dual-sim or one sim and micro-sd. The Motorola Moto G7 Power has a 6.2-inch LCD screen that is well adjusted but has a lower HD resolution. Photos, videos and text therefore look less sharp than on a full-HD display. The double camera on the back also wins no prizes. He does what he has to do, but in this price segment you can get a better camera. The Moto G7 Power runs on a barely modified Android version and that is great. You are not bothered by unnecessary adjustments or extra apps. Unfortunately, Motorola makes fewer and shorter updates available than competing brands.

6. Oppo A5 2020

7.5 Score 75 Score: 75

+ Smooth hardware

+ Very good battery life

– Low screen resolution

– Size is too large for some

Oppo’s A5 2020 is an affordable smartphone that stands out for its huge 5000 mAh battery. Thanks to that above-average large battery capacity, the device lasts – depending on your use – between two and five days. You then charge it via the USB-C connection. What is nice is that the A5 2020 has an NFC chip so that you can use the phone to make contactless payments in stores. Furthermore, the device has a lot of storage memory, a fast processor and a large 6.5-inch LCD screen. For some that is ideal, others think it is just too big. The HD screen resolution is on the low side, making the display look less sharp than smartphones with a full HD screen. The A5 2020 is one of the first budget telephones with four cameras on the back. This is a normal camera, a wide-angle lens and two depth sensors for macro and portrait photos. Great, although many devices need one depth sensor. The photos of the A5 2020 are good enough and thanks to the night mode you can also take nice pictures in the dark. Oppo’s ColorOS software across Android is radical. After habituation it is fine to work with, but we look forward to the improvements in ColorOS 7. The manufacturer’s update policy is fine.

7. Samsung Galaxy M20 Power

7.5 Score 75 Score: 75

+ Very long battery life

+ Great screen

– Fingerprint scanner difficult to reach

– Older software

Just like the Motorola Moto G7 Power and Oppo A5 2020, the Samsung Galaxy M20 Power has a huge 5000 mAh battery. He sings it smoothly for two to four days. If you do little with your smartphone, you may need to charge the M20 Power once or twice a week. And charging is nice and quick via USB-C, so the battery is quickly full again. Other plus points of the M20 Power are the beautiful 6.3-inch full-HD screen, the fast processor and the dual camera on the back. It takes good “normal” photos and wide-angle images, which is useful if you want to capture a large building or group of people. There are also points for attention. The phone is missing a notification light and the fingerprint scanner on the back is quite high. It is difficult for anyone with smaller hands to reach it. Finally the software: Samsung released the M20 Power with the strongly outdated Android 8.1 (Oreo) and needed a long time to release an Android 9 update. When it appeared, Android 10 was at the door. It is expected that it will be a long time before Samsung brings the latest software to its budget phone. That is not a disaster, but you have to wait longer for improvements and innovations.

8. Xiaomi Mi A3

7 Score 70 Score: 70

+ Android One software

+ Good performance

– Moderate display

– Not the best fingerprint scanner

The Xiaomi Mi A3 has its Android One software as its greatest asset. On this device you experience the clean Android version as developed by Google, without modifications from a manufacturer. No unnecessary visual changes or extra apps: simply user-friendly software, including an excellent update policy. Xiaomi – by Google – is obliged to provide the Mi A3 with regular security updates for at least three years and must also update the phone to Android R, which is expected to be released at the end of 2020. Apart from the software, the Mi A3 is a nice smartphone with a premium appearance and a USB-C port. The performance is fine and the battery will effortlessly last a day. The storage memory measures a generous 64GB or 128GB, depending on which version you purchase. Also nice is the triple camera on the back. The primary 48-megapixel lens in particular takes good photos, even in the dark. You also benefit from a wide-angle lens (for wide photos) and a portrait lens (for a blurred background). Negatives are there too. The Mi A3 uses a fairly slow fingerprint scanner behind the display and comes with a slow charger. If you get an 18W plug in the house, the battery will charge considerably faster. Worse is the HD resolution of the OLED screen, making the display clearly less sharp and beautiful than the competition.

9. Huawei Y7 2019

7 Score 70 Score: 70

+ Good battery life

+ Relatively compact

– Not the fastest processor

– Low screen resolution

The Huawei Y7 2019 is a budget device and that is reflected in the price and specifications. The plastic smartphone looks quite luxurious and fits comfortably in the hand, with the relatively compact dimensions particularly striking. The 6.26-inch LCD screen is of good quality but does not look so sharp due to the HD resolution. In this price segment, many smartphones have a sharper full-HD display. The Y7 2019 has 32GB of storage space and that is enough for quite a few photos, videos and apps. You can expand the memory with a micro-SD card. There is a double camera on the back of the device, the background of which can blur the background. This is how you make a portrait photo in which the person in the foreground comes into its own better. The Y7 2019 does not have the fastest processor and you notice that especially when playing games. The 4000 mAh battery in turn lasts a few days. You charge the battery via an old micro-usb port and not via usb-c. Charging therefore takes longer. The EMIUI software from Huawei is just switching if you previously had a phone from another brand. After some getting used to it works fine and Huawei rolls out updates regularly and a few years. If you value software, we recommend an Android One smartphone.

10. Huawei P Smart + 2019

7 Score 70 Score: 70

+ Good triple camera

+ Nice screen

– Micro USB port

– Not the fastest processor

The Huawei P Smart + 2019 is a slightly newer and better variant of the P Smart 2019, which you will also find in this list. The Plus version distinguishes itself with a rear camera with three lenses, where the normal P Smart has two. On the Plus phone you can take wide photos with the wide angle photos, a handy addition. In addition, the device gets updates a few months longer because it is newer. Downside is the lack of an NFC chip, which means that you cannot pay contactless in the store with this phone. Furthermore, the P Smart + 2019 is identical to the normal P Smart 2019, which means that the phone has a good battery life and has a lot of storage space. The 6.21-inch full-HD screen looks great, the fingerprint scanner is fast and the camera performance is good. The processor is not the fastest in this segment and the micro-USB port used is a minus point, because almost all competitors have a better USB-C connection. For example, the battery charges faster via USB-C. Huawei’s EMUI software on Android works fine after some habituation and the manufacturer has a good update policy. All in all, the P Smart 2019 and the Plus version are so different from each other that it comes down to small, but possibly important, differences for you.
