The record price of a liter of petrol has fallen several times since the beginning of May and is now higher than ever on an almost daily basis. On Thursday, however, the price of a liter of diesel also rose to its highest point since 2012.
A liter of diesel now costs € 1,559 and that is the highest level ever. This is apparent from data from UnitedConsumers, which receives the national recommended prices daily from the oil companies. The old record for diesel was dated 16 October 2012 when a liter of diesel cost € 1,558.
The price of a liter of petrol now breaks records almost daily, again on Thursday. The national suggested retail price for a liter is now € 1,913. The long-standing record for gasoline also dates back to 2012. “The prices of the different fuel types follow each other quite closely,” UnitedConsumers director Paul van Selms told NU.nl. “So it is expected that the price of a liter of LPG will soon reach a new high.” LPG was the most expensive at the beginning of 2014, at € 0.946 per litre, currently the recommended retail price is € 0.93 per litre.
Since the beginning of this year, fuel prices have been rising steadily, in the wake of the improving economy and rising oil prices. Van Selms does not dare to say whether a liter of petrol will go to 2 euros per liter in the short term. “There are no indications that it is getting out of hand, but cheap is different. That 2 euros is just a number, but it is a psychologically important limit.”
Many gas station owners give discounts on fuel prices, so that the new prices do not actually have to be paid in all cases. Fuels are expensive in the Netherlands compared to neighboring countries. This is due to the high taxes, excise duties and VAT.
