Disable automatic Windows 11 updates

Disable automatic Windows 11 updates

In Windows 11, the latest updates for the operating system are usually downloaded and installed automatically, but you may not want this to happen or you would rather not. Although updates should in principle solve all teething problems in the new operating system, it sometimes pays to wait a few days before installing a new update. You have to disable automatic updates for that.

Microsoft doesn’t really want you to delay updates, because then your PC will run a security risk. That’s why you won’t find the option to completely disable automatic updates in new versions of the operating system. The detour that previously worked in Windows 10 via the Group Policy Object Editor also works in Windows 11 not anymore. Type in the search bar gpedit.msc then the window to postpone the updates will no longer open.

Via the Run menu

There is another way to prevent updates from being installed automatically. Press the Windows button and R key on your keyboard at the same time to get to the Run window. Type here services.msc and press OK or press Enter. In the Services menu that appears, scroll all the way down the list of services until you see Windows Update sees standing. Right click on it and choose Characteristics. If you’re at Service status the text Is carried out see, then click Fuses. Is there already in the status Stoppedthen you do nothing.

Then, in the same window, you can Startup type choose for Manually or Turned off, which means that system updates are no longer automatically downloaded and installed. If you change your mind at any time, you can always choose the option in the same menu Automatically select.

You can disable automatic updates for Windows 11 in the Services menu.

Connection with data limit

If your PC or laptop is connected to the internet via WiFi, there is also another option to postpone updates. You can pretend that your internet connection has a data limit: as a result, updates are no longer downloaded automatically.

Go to the Settings app and click in the menu on the left Network and Internet. Under the heading Wi-Fi is the option Make a connection, manage known networks, network with data limit. If you press the slider on this On then Windows 11 will think you have a metered internet connection and system updates will not be downloaded automatically. If your computer is connected via an Ethernet connection, this option will logically not work.
