Does prevention save lives?

Which examinations make sense to detect cancer earlier and to be able to treat it better? Doctor Jürgen Brater reviewed the study situation.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Germany after cardiovascular diseases. According to the Federal Statistical Office, almost 231,300 people died in 2020, 54 percent of whom were men. And because the chance of curing a malignant tumor is greater the earlier it is detected, it seems at first glance to make a lot of sense to take advantage of examinations for early cancer detection – especially since the costs are usually covered by the statutory health insurance companies…
